India’s first Skill India International Centre
- India’s first Skill India International Centre will be set up in Bhubaneswar for training youths with an aim to enhance overseas opportunities for the skilled workforce.
- An MoU was exchanged between the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the Skill Development Institute (SDI) on 16 April 2022.
- A National Academy for Skill Teachers will be set up at the SDI campus.
Tamil Nadu wins National basketball Championship
- Tamil Nadu defeated defending champion Punjab 87-69 in the final to win the men’s title in the 71st Senior National Basketball Championship in April 2022.
- Karnataka and Railways were at 3rd and 4th position, respectively.
- Indian Railways team won the women’s title, beating Telangana 131-82.
- Tamil Nadu and Kerala were in 3rd and 4th place, respectively, in the women’s match.
Jay Shah appointed as Member Board Representative of ICC Cricket Committee
- BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has been appointed to the ICC Cricket Committee as the Member Board Representative.
- Mahela Jayawardene was reappointed as the Past Player representative.
- From the 2022-23 season, one neutral and one home umpire in Tests will be allowed.
- It has also been announced that South Africa will host the inaugural ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Manoj Soni appointed as new UPSC Chairman
- Dr Manoj Soni has been appointed as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
- He is currently a member of the UPSC.
- He served as the country’s youngest ViceChancellor in 2005, of MS University.
- He also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University in Ahmedabad between August 2009 to July 2015.
Bengali author Amar Mitra awarded O. Henry Prize for 45-year-old story
- Bengali author Amar Mitra has been awarded the O.Henry Prize 2022 for a short story he wrote 45 years back.
- The short story titled ‘Gaonburo’ is a Bengali short fiction written in 1977.
- Mitra was also awarded the Sahitya Academy award in the year 2006.
- Mitra was born in Kolkata and is a well-known writer of Bengali literature.
Tamil Nadu CM inaugurates Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram
- Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin inaugurated the Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram in Periyakozhuvaari Panchayat in Vanur taluk of Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu, in April 2022.
- 100 dwelling units with all basic amenities were built at the cost of 2 crores 88 lakh rupees.
- He also handed over various welfare schemes worth over 42 crore rupees to a total of 10722 beneficiaries.
Palmking (Amathusia phidippus)
- Recently, the rare butterfly Palmking (Amathusia phidippus) was sighted for the first time in Tamil Nadu.
- Palmking was first recorded in South India by British scientist H.S.Ferguson in More than a Century later, it was rediscovered in 2007.
- Palmking belongs to the Nymphalidae subfamily and feeds on palm, coconut and calamus varieties of plants.
- The butterfly is characterised by its brown colour and dark bands and is described as reclusive, mostly resting in the shade.
Bernardinelli-Bernstein Comet
- Recently, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Hubble Space Telescope has confirmed that the huge Bernardinelli-Bernstein comet is indeed the largest icy comet nucleus ever seen by astronomers.
- The nucleus is called the C/2014 UN271 which has an estimated diameter of almost 129
- The nucleus is around 50 times larger than that of most known comets, and its mass is estimated to be around 500 trillion tonnes.
- The comet was discovered by astronomers Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein in archival images from the Dark Energy Survey at an astronomical observatory in Chile.
First and only five-star officer of the Indian Air Force
- To commemorate the 103rd Birth Anniversary of 1st fivestar officer of the Indian Air force (IAF) Late Sh. Arjan Singh, IAF has organized a football tournament in his name.
- Late Arjan Singh, joined the Royal Indian Airforce at an age of 19 years, becoming a Pilot. He fought in WW2 for British India. Later in the 1965 war, he led the Indian Air Force and made India victorious.
- He was awarded Padma Vibhushan and in the year 2002, he has conferred the rank of India’s only 1st Five-Star officer with Indian Air Force. He has also been conferred the rank of Marshal.
300 units of free power
- Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced 300 units of free electricity each month for every household in the state from July
- Addressing a gathering at an event in Chandigarh, he also said there would be no increase in the electricity tariff for industrial consumers while free power to the farming community will continue.
- Providing free electricity to every household for up to 300 units was one of the major promises made by AAP in the run-up to the Punjab Assembly polls.
India’s first flying Training Organization for the Northeast region
- Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has inaugurated Northeast India’s first-ever Flying Training academy in Assam’s Lilabari.
- The flying academy has been developed by Redbird Flight Training Academy in collaboration with the Airports Authority of India.
- The Redbird Flying Club will give a 200-hour commercial pilot training.
- Their aim is to make the aspirants capable of flying Airbus or Boeing 737 and will be providing certificates for the same.
Guru Tegh Bahadur
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation on the 400th Parkash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji at the Red Fort in New Delhi on 21st of April,
- Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621 – 1675) was the ninth of ten Sikh Gurus and the leader of Sikhs from 1665 until his beheading in
- He was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India in 1621 and was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh guru. His 115 hymns are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the main text of Sikhism.
- He built the city of Anandpur Sahib.
Gulf of Gabes
- A Fuel Ship with 750 tons of diesel sinks off the Gulf Of Gabes in Tunisia.
- The Gulf of Gabes also known as Lesser Syrtis contrasting with the Greater Syrtis in Libya, is a gulf on Tunisia’s east coast in the Mediterranean Sea, off North Africa.
- At the head of the gulf is the city of Gabès (Ghannouche) where the tides have a large range of up to 1 m at spring tides.
First testing device that can detect COVID-19 in the breath samples of humans
- Recently, The US Food and Drug Administration has issued an emergency use authorization for the Covid-19 test named InspectIR COVID-19
- It is the first testing device that can detect COVID-19 in the breath samples of humans.
- The device uses a technique called gas chromatography gas mass-spectrometry (GCMS) to separate and identify chemical mixtures and rapidly detect five Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in exhaled breath.
Cyclopean Wall of Rajgir
- Recently, The Bihar government has sent a fresh proposal to the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) to get the Cyclopean wall listed as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site.
- It is a 40 km long wall of stone built in Rajgir, Bihar.
- It was built to encircle the ancient city of Rajgir to protect it from external enemies and invaders.
- It is believed to have been built in the pre-Mauryan era (before the 3rd century BC) using massive stones.
