Two Indian-American technocrats among top 50 IT leaders of the year
- Two Indian-American technocrats, Krishna Kumar Edathil from Texas and Nikhil Deshpande from Georgia, have made it to the coveted StateScoop Top 50 2022 list.
- The StateScoop 50 Awards annually honor best and brightest who make state government more efficient and effective.
- While Edathil has been named State IT Leader of the Year, Deshpande has been declared the State Leadership of the Year.
Coal Miners Day: 4 May
- Coal Miners Day is observed annually on 4 May.
- The day honors the accomplishments and sacrifices made by coal mine workers so far.
- The first-ever coal mine was opened in 1575 by one George Bruce of Carnock, Scotland.
- In India, the coal mining business began in 1774.
- It was when the East India Company exploited the Raniganj coalfield which is located in the Asansol and Durgapur region.
Ronnie O’Sullivan wins record seventh World Snooker title
- Ronnie O’Sullivan won a record seventh World Snooker Championship crown after beating Judd Trump 18-13 in the final, in May 2022.
- With this title, O’Sullivan has equaled Stephen Hendry’s modern-day record of seven world titles.
- Hendry remains snooker’s youngestever world champion, winning in 1990 at the age of 21, and had claimed an unprecedented five world titles in a row.
Kamalpreet Kaur suspended after testing positive for a drug
- Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after testing positive for a banned steroid.
- She will face the prospect of being banned for a maximum period of four years if she is found guilty.
- Kaur holds the national record of 65.06m which she had achieved in 2021.
- She had finished sixth in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Alkesh Kumar Sharma assumes charge as new Secretary of MeitY
- Alkesh Kumar Sharma assumed charge as Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology on 5 May 2022.
- He is an Indian Administrative Services Officer of the 1990 batch, from the Kerala cadre.
- He has earlier served as Additional Secretary and Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India.
- He also served as the CMD the National Industrial Corridor Development Corp Ltd.
India wins two gold and one bronze medal in 24th Deaflympics
- At the ongoing 24th Deaflympics at Caxias do Sul in Brazil, India won two golds and one bronze medal.
- Shooter Dhanush Srikanth struck gold in the Men’s 10m air rifle competition while Shourya Saini bagged a bronze, finishing behind Korea’s Kim Woo Rim in the eight-man final.
- The Indian badminton team also won gold beating Japan 3-1 in the final.
Indian Coast Guard commissions its second ALH Mk III Squadron in Kochi
- Coast Guard on 4 May 2022, commissioned its second Air Squadron, 845 Squadron (CG), at the Coast Guard Air Enclave at Nedumbassery in Kochi.
- The new Air Squadron is equipped with the indigenously developed Advanced Mark III (ALH Mark III) helicopters.
- The Squadron, led by Commandant Kunal Naik has nine officers and 35 men.
- Indian Coast Guard is celebrating 46th Raising Day on 01 Feb 2022.
India gets its 100th unicorn startup neobank Open
- India got its 100th unicorn when neobanking fintech portal, Open, raised fresh capital to push up its value to over a bn dollars.
- The 5-year-old Bengaluru-based neobank raised $50 mn in a Series D funding round.
- Open will now be able to expand its product offerings to small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs).
- It is set to launch 3 new products in the SME lending space such as ‘Open Flo’.
Madrid clinch record-extending 35th Spanish League title
- Real Madrid clinched a record-extending 35th Spanish league title after defeating Espanyol 4-0, in May 2022.
- Rodrygo scored twice and Marco Asensio and substitute Karim Benzema added a goal each to give Madrid its second league title in three seasons, and third in six years.
- With the title, Carlo Ancelotti became the first coach to lift trophies in the top five European leagues.
World Portuguese Language Day: 5 May
- The Council of Ministers of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) originally began observing a Day of the Portuguese Language and Culture in May5.
- In 2019, UNESCO changed it to World Portuguese Language Day.
- This was the 1st time an unofficial UNESCO language was given this honour.
- CPLP is an intergovernmental organization that has been in partnership with UNESCO since 2000.
India becomes world’s number one ranked T20 team
- India under new captain Rohit Sharma finished the 2021-22 season as the world’s number one ranked T20 team in the annual Test rankings released by ICC on 4 May 2022.
- New Zealand finished the last season as the world’s No.1 ODI team with the cutoff date being May 4, 2022.
- Pakistan has overtaken England to the fifth position in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings.
Supreme Court approves formation of the Supreme Court Committee
- The Supreme Court has approved the formation of the Supreme Court Committee for recovery of money from the defaulters against whom National Spot Exchange Ltd has secured money decrees.
- It will be headed by Justice (retd) Pradeep Nandrajog.
- NSEL, has already, single-handedly secured decrees/ arbitration awards worth Rs. 3,534.46 crore against the defaulters.
PM Modi participates in 2nd India-Nordic Summit
- PM Narendra Modi participated in the 2nd India-Nordic Summit on 4 May 2022.
- PM Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, PM Katrín Jakobsdóttir of Iceland, PM Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, PM Magdalena Andersson of Sweden, and PM Sanna Marin of Finland, also participated in it.
- It provided an opportunity to review the progress of the India-Nordic relations since the 1st India-Nordic Summit held in 2018.
Archana Gulati appointed as new public policy head of Google
- Alphabet Inc’s Google has appointed Archana Gulati as the new public policy head in India.
- She previously worked at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s federal think-tank and the country’s antitrust watchdog NITI Aayog as a joint secretary for digital communications.
- Between 2014 and 2016, she worked as a senior official at India’s antitrust body, the Competition Commission of India.
New ex-officio member of RBI Menetary Policy Committee
- Rajiv Ranjan has been appointed as the ex-officio member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) by Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
- He replaced Mridul Saggar, who retired last month. Prior to this, he was an advisor in-charge in the monetary policy department, before he was elevated as an executive director.
- MPC is a 6-member body and is headed by RBI governor. There are 3 members from RBI and 3 members nominated by Government.
1st Indian to win a Gold at IWF Junior World Championships
- Harshada Sharad Garud became the first Indian to win a Gold medal at IWF Junior World Championships 2022 in Heraklion, Greece.
- She lifted 153-kilogram in the 45-kg weight category, that included 70 kg in Snatch and 83 kg in Clean and Jerk to finish on top of the podium.
- Turkey’s Bektas Cansu bagged silver medal and Moldova’s Teodora Luminita Hincu won the bronze medal.
