Maharashtra and Gujarat Day: 1 May

  • 1 May is observed as Maharashtra and Gujarat Day.
  • The Bombay Reorganisation Act was passed in the Parliament, after which the state of Bombay got divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat.
  • The legislation got the green light on May 1, 1960, and since then, the day is celebrated as Maharashtra and Gujarat Day in the two states separately.

International Labour Day: 1 May

  • International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in most countries, is observed every year on May
  • It recognizes employees’ contributions to society and their willingness to make sacrifices.
  • It is also known as May Day in India.
  • In India, Labour Day was first celebrated in 1923 by the Labour Kisan Party, which organised the May Day celebrations in Chennai (then Madras).

Ardeshir B K Dubash conferred highest diplomatic award by the govt

  • The former Honorary Consul of Peru in Mumbai, Ardeshir B.K. Dubash received the Order of Merit in the Diplomatic Service of Peru José Gregorio Paz Soldán, in April
  • It is the highest distinction conferred by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru.
  • Mr Dubash was designated as Honorary Consul of Peru on August 13th,

A fifth of world’s reptile species deemed threatened with extinction

  • About a fifth of reptile species are threatened with extinction, as informed by researchers in the first comprehensive global status assessment for reptiles.
  • The study examined 10,196 reptile species including turtles, crocodilians, lizards, snakes, and the tuatara.
  • They found that 21% of species are critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable to extinction.

Meghalaya e-proposal system wins prestigious UN award

  • Meghalaya’s Planning Department’s key initiative of the e-Proposal System has won UN Award – World Summit on the Information Society Forum (WSIS) Prizes
  • The initiative is a part of Meghalaya Enterprise Architecture (MeghEA).
  • It eliminates 75 per cent physical work of files in government departments.
  • Meghalaya was selected among the top 360 projects across the world.

India’s first Amrit Sarovar prepared in UP’s Rampur

  • India’s first ‘Amrit Sarovar’ has been completed in Rampur’s Gram Panchayat Patwai.
  • Under the Amrit Sarovar initiative, 75 water bodies will be developed and rejuvenated in each district as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • 75 ponds in Rampur were selected to be developed as Amrit Sarovar.
  • Now the work on the pond having the largest area in Gram Panchayat Singan Kheda has also started.

Eminent biologist Prof M Vijayan passes away

  • Leading structural biologist M Vijayan, who laid the foundations of protein crystallography in India, passed away in April
  • Vijayan was a former President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
  • Prof Vijayan was involved in the determination of insulin structure at Oxford University along with Dorothy Hodgkin and her legendary group.

Sir David Attenborough earns UN ‘Champion of the Earth’ award

  • Sir David Attenborough has been officially recognized as a “Champion of the Earth” by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
  • He is just the fifth person to receive the award for lifetime achievement.
  • Some of his most famous documentaries include Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Life on Earth, and Our Planet.
  • Past winners of the award include Robert Bullard and Joan Carling.

Vedaant wins gold at Danish Open 2022

  • R Madhavan’s son Vedaant Madhavan won a gold medal in swimming at the Danish Open 2022 in Copenhagen, on Apr’
  • He won the medal in the 800m swimming championship and finished in 8:17.28
  • He defeated swimmer Alexander L Bjorn by 10.
  • Vedaant had won the silver medal in the 1500m freestyle event earlier, before bettering his 200m freestyle time to finish 12th overall in the event.

Planet Parade

  • In a rare and unique astronomical event known as the ‘Planet Parade’, four planets- Venus, Jupiter, Mars, and Saturn will align in a straight line after 1,000 years during the last week of April
  • The moon along with the 4 planets will be visible one hour before sunrise on April 26 and April
  • The moon will reportedly move along with the four planets until April 29, and the others will remain in the cosmic line till early July

India won 2 gold medals in Archery World Cup Stage-1

  • India won 2 gold medals in Archery World Cup Stage-1 in Turkey
  • India has defeated France by 232-231 in the compound men’s team final to win the gold medal in the Archery World Cup Stage-1 at Antalya, Turkey.
  • The Indian trio of Abhishek Verma, Rajat Chauhan, and Aman Saini has defeated has French team of Jean Philippe Boulch, Quentin Baraer and Adrien Gontier.
  • The Indian duo of Tarundeep Rai and Ridhi has defeated Alex Wise and Bryony Pitman of Great Britain to win recurve mixed team gold Medal.

International Girls in ICT Day

  • International Girls in ICT Day is marked annually on the fourth Thursday in April. This year International Girls in ICT Day is observed on 28th April
  • This year’s theme is access and safety.

Gene Bank

TNPSC CURRENT AFFAIRS ENGLISH MAY 2022 01

  • Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the ‘Maharashtra Gene Bank’, a first-of-its-kind project in India.
  • Aim: To conserve genetic resources in Maharashtra including marine diversity, seeds of local crops, and animal diversity.
  • In the next five years, an amount of ₹172.39 crores will be spent on these seven focus areas.
  • The project will be implemented by the Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board (MSBB) and will be overseen by committees under the chief secretary and the principal secretary (forests).
