UN Chinese Language Day: 20 April
- The UN Chinese Language Day is observed every year on or around April 20.
- The contribution of Chinese literature, poetry and language to world culture is highlighted on this day.
- The first UN Chinese Language Day was held on November 12, 2010.
- In 2011, the date was moved to April 20.
- The United Nations has 6 official languages – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
Nation’s first portable solar rooftop system unveiled in Gandhinagar
- India’s first portable solar rooftop system was inaugurated at Swaminarayan Akshardham temple complex in Gandhinagar on 18 April 2022.
- The installation of 10 PV Port systems in the temple complex has been supported by the German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit.
- The PV Ports have been manufactured by New Delhi-based Servotech Power Systems Ltd.
IndusInd Bank bags global ‘Celent Model Bank’ Award
- IndusInd Bank has been awarded the global ‘Celent Model Bank’ award under the category ‘Payments System Transformation’.
- It has been awarded for building Enterprise Payments Hub (EPH).
- Under the initiative, IndusInd Bank has successfully designed a solution that will cut down on transaction costs and improve operation as well as customer experience, across all transaction points.
Indian GM Gukesh wins title at La Roda International tourney
- India’s youngest Grandmaster D Gukesh emerged victorious in the 48th La Roda International Open Chess tournament, scoring eight points from nine rounds.
- He defeated Israel’s Victor Mikhalevski in the final round on 17 April 2022.
- Gukesh’s compatriot R Praggnanandhaa, took the third spot.
- He finished with seven points but won the third prize on the basis of a better tie-break score.
IAF successfully test-fires BrahMos missile from Su30-MkI fighter jet
- The Indian Air Force (IAF) on 19 April 2022 successfully test-fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from a Sukhoi fighter jet on the Eastern seaboard.
- The firing of the missile was carried out in coordination with the Indian Navy.
- BrahMos missile flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost three times the speed of sound.
- They can be launched from submarines, aircraft, and land platforms.
Vagsheer, the last of six submarines under Project 75, launched
- The Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders on 20 April 2022, launched INS Vagsheer, the last of the six submarines under Project 75.
- The submarine was launched by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar.
- Named after sandfish, a deadly deep water sea predator of the Indian Ocean, the first submarine ‘Vagsheer’ was commissioned in December 1974.
- It was decommissioned in April 1997.
3 Greco Roman Indian wrestlers win bronze medals in wrestling
- Wrestlers of India, including Sunil Kumar, won bronze medals on 19 April 2022 on the first day of the Asian Wrestling Championship.
- This is for the second time that Sunil has earned a podium finish at the Asian championships, having won the 87 kg title in the 2020 edition.
- In the 55kg competition, Arjun Halakurki defeated Davaabandi Munkh Erdene to win the bronze medal.
National Metallurgist Award 2021 presented on 20 April 2022
- The Union Steel Ministry hosted the National Metallurgist Award 2021 in New Delhi on 20 April 2022.
- It was held to recognize the outstanding contribution of metallurgists and engineers in the field of iron and steel.
- The awards were given under the categories Lifetime Achievement Award, National Metallurgist Award, Award for R&D in the Iron & Steel Sector, etc
Imprisoned Ukranian journalist to be honoured by PEN America
- Vladyslav Yesypenko, a Ukranian journalist imprisoned in Crimea, has been chosen as the recipient of the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award.
- He was arrested in 2021 and sentenced to six years in a Russian labor camp for alleged possession and transport of explosives.
- The PEN award was established in 1987 and is given to writers and artists imprisoned for their work.
Defence Secretary inaugurates two-day ‘NATPOLREX-VIII’ exercise
- Defence Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar inaugurated, on April 19, 2022, the 8th edition of the two-day National Level Pollution Response Exercise, ‘NATPOLREX-VIII’.
- It is being conducted by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) off Mormugao harbor, Goa.
- The objective of NATPOLREX-VIII is to enhance the preparedness and response capability of all the stakeholders in combating marine spills.
Indian-American Navy veteran appointed Kamala Harris’s Defence Advisor
- Indian-American US Navy Shanti Sethi has been appointed as Executive Secretary and Defence Advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris.
- She is the first Indian-American commander of a major US Navy combat ship.
- Sethi commanded the guided-missile destroyer, USS Decatur, from December 2010 to May 2012.
- She was also the first female commander of a US naval vessel to visit India.
India’s 1st Internet Radio for visually challenged “Radio Aksh”
- India’s first-ever radio channel for the visually impaired, named ‘Radio Aksh’ has been launched in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
- Nagpur’s 96-year-old institution, The Blind Relief Association Nagpur (TBRAN) and Samdrushti Kshamata Vikas Avam Anusandhan Mandal (Saksham) are the organisations behind this idea. The channel will be available on various internet radio platforms for free.
- A dedicated team of trained volunteers, mostly women, help in the creation of content for the radio channel, which can be streamed to the visually impaired across India and the world.
Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission
- The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has granted one year extension to Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas.
- The extension in service to Vyas for a period of one year beyond May 3, 2022 or “until further orders”.
- This is the second extension for Vyas, he was first appointed to the post in September 2018.
- Awards: The Indian Nuclear Society Outstanding Service Award 2011; The Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award 2006, and DAE Award 2007.
Largest consumer of Gold’ in the World
- According to the official data, the import of gold in India has been rose by 33.34% to ₹46.14 billion on account of higher demand in 2021-22.
- The import of gold in 2020-21 was about ₹34.62 billion. The increase in gold imports has contributed to the widening of the trade deficit to $192.41 billion, against $102.62 billion in 2020-21.
- India is the world’s second-biggest gold consumer after China. The imports are largely driven by the jewellery industry. The export of gems and jewellery grew by about 50% to about $39 billion during 2021- 22.
India’s first Semicon Conference
- Union MoS I&T Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar has announced the inauguration of the Semicon India 2022 Conference by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru on 29th April.
- The conference is being organized to take forward the vision of PM Modi which is to make India a leader in electronics manufacturing, semiconductor design, manufacturing & innovation.
- Semicon India 2022 Conference will be organised by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology from April 29 – 01 May 2022 at ITC Gardenia, Bengaluru on the theme of – Design and Manufacture in India, for the World: Making India a “Semiconductor Nation”.
