OneWeb inks pact with ISRO commercial arm for satellite launches
- Bharti group-backed OneWeb and New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of ISRO, have entered into an agreement that will help ensure OneWeb completes its satellite launch programme.
- The first launch with New Space India is expected in 2022 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota.
- The launches will add to OneWeb’s total in-orbit constellation of 428 satellites.
Boris Johnson becomes first UK PM to visit Sabarmati Ashram
- On 21 April 2022, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson became the first UK PM to visit the Sabarmati Ashram in Gujarat.
- It is the place from where Gandhi Ji led India’s struggle for freedom from the British colonial rule for more than a decade.
- Boris Johnson is also the first British PM to visit Gujarat post-1947.
- Currently, he is on a 2-day visit to India.
Thailand gets India-made Covid vaccines under Quad initiative
- Thailand received 200,000 doses of India-made Covovax vaccines on 21 Apr 2022 as part of a flagship initiative of the Quad grouping to help countries combat the pandemic.
- This is the second consignment of vaccines delivered by India under the Quad vaccine partnership.
- The Quad vaccine partnership was announced by leaders of the four-nation grouping at their first summit in March 2021.
Wipro appoints Satya Easwaran as Country Head of India
- Wipro has appointed Satya Easwaran as the Country Head for India.
- Satya will be in charge of strengthening Wipro’s business in India across key industry sectors through strategic consulting, transformation, and modernization engagements.
- Prior to joining Wipro, Easwaran was the Head of Business Consulting and the Telecom, Media & Technology (TMT) Sector Leader at KPMG India.
World Creativity and Innovation Day: 21 April
- The UN-designated 21 April to be celebrated as the World Creativity and Innovation Day.
- The main idea is to push creative multidisciplinary thinking among different countries,at both the individual and group level.
- The day is part of the World Creativity Week celebrations, which last from 15 to 21 April every year.
- It was founded in Toronto, Canada by Canadian Marci Segal, on 25 May 2001.
India’s first pure green hydrogen plant commissioned in Jorhat
- Oil India Ltd commissioned India’s first 99.99% pure green hydrogen pilot plant at its Jorhat Pump Station in Assam on 20 Apr 2022.
- It has an installed capacity of 10 kg per day and was commissioned in a record time of 3 months.
- The plant produces green hydrogen from the electricity generated by the existing 500kW Solar plant using a 100 kW Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Electrolyser array.
National Civil Services Day: 21 April
- India observes National Civil Services Day on April 21 every year.
- It is celebrated to commemorate the day when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, first Home Minister of Independent India addressed probationers of Administrative Services Officers at Delhi’s Metcalf House in 1947.
- PM Modi will confer Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Public Administration on the occasion on 21 April 2022.
US-based EV maker Biliti to set up plant in Telangana worth $150 mn
- US-based Biliti Electric (Biliti) will set up the world’s largest electric three-wheeler factory in Telangana with an investment of $150 million (₹1,144 crores).
- It will have a production capacity of 2.40 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) each year.
- The new plant is estimated to drive private investment of USD 150 million and create over 3,000 jobs in the state.
20th edition of India-France Joint Staff talks conclude
- The 20th India-France Joint Staff talks concluded in Paris on 20 Apr’22.
- The talks have been established to enhance defence cooperation between the two countries through regular talks at the strategic and operational levels.
- The discussions focused on new initiatives under the ambit of the existing bilateral defence cooperation mechanism and strengthening ongoing defence engagements.
East Timor
- East Timor, also known as Timor Leste, Asia’s Youngest Democracy, held the second and final round of its presidential election.
- East Timor is bounded by the Timor Sea to the southeast, the Wetar Strait to the north, the Ombai Strait to the northwest, and western Timor (part of the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara) to the southwest.
- East Timor comprises the eastern half of Timor island, the western half of which is part of Indonesia.
Aurora
- Stunning aurora glow was recently observed above Iceland.
- An Aurora is a display of light in the sky predominantly seen in the high latitude regions (Arctic and Antarctic). It is also known as a Polar light.
- There are two types- the aurora borealis and aurora australis – often called the northern lights and southern lights.
- They commonly occur at high northern and southern latitudes, less frequent at mid-latitudes, and seldom seen near the equator.
Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the three day Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit (GAIIS) in Gandhinagar on April 20, 2022.
- WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Mauritius PM Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and Union AYUSH Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were present at the ceremony.
- The key aim of the summit is to attract lucrative investments to build India as the Global Ayush Destination in the world.
Richest Billionaire in the healthcare sector 2022
- Chairman and Managing Director of Serum Institute of India (SII), Dr Cyrus S. Poonawalla has topped the Hurun Global Healthcare Rich List 2022 and became the Richest Billionaire in the healthcare sector 2022.
- He has topped the list with a new value of USD 26 billion (up 41%).
- Cyrus Poonawalla is followed by Thomas Frist Jr & Family of HCA Healthcare, Li Xiting and Xu Hang of Mindray at the 2nd position with a net value of USD 19 billion.
- Dilip Shanghvi & Family, of the Sun Pharmaceuticals, is at the 5th position with a net worth of USD 18 billion.
Tax imposed on cryptocurrency
- Honourable Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has registered India’s stand on cryptocurrency at the International Monetary Fund.
- The Government of India has levied a tax of 30% upon cryptocurrency under the head digital transaction tax, in the budget 2022.
- Registering India’s stand, the FM sought a Global Crypto Regulation Framework. The nature of this framework is yet to be finalized.
- El-Salvador was the first country to adopt crypto as the legal tender.
- Cryptocurrency is valued at more than 250 bn as per CoinCDX research 2021.
“Neptune” Ukraine’s Homemade Anti-Ship Cruise Missile
- Neptune is a Ukrainian homemade anti-ship cruise missile capable of destroying targets within a range of 300 km. The Neptune Missile system was inducted into the Ukrainian Defence Forces in March 2021.
- The 16-ft long engine-powered missiles can travel at speeds of up to 560mph (900 km/h) and at heights of between nine and 30ft above the surface.
- It weighs around 870 Kilogram (kg) and carries a 150kg warhead.
