Two Indian student groups win NASA rover challenge
- Two Indian student groups have won the NASA 2022 Human Exploration Rover Challenge.
- Decent Children Model Presidency School from Punjab was the winner of the STEM Engagement Award in the High School division.
- The team from Vellore Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu was declared the winner in the College/University division in the Social Media Award.
Country’s largest life insurer LIC IPO opens for public subscription
- The Initial Public Offering, IPO of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has opened for public subscription from 4 May 2022.
- It will remain open for subscription till the 9th of May.
- LIC IPO is the biggest public offering in the country.
- The allotment of shares to the Demat account of bidders will take place by 16th May and the IPO will list for trading on 17th May.
12th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship begins
- In Hockey, a total of 29 teams are participating in the 12th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2022 which began in Goa on 4 May 2022.
- Eight days of pool matches will be followed by Quarter-Finals on May 12, the Semi-Finals on May 14, and the Medal matches are scheduled for May 15.
- The participating teams are divided into eight pools.
India falls 8 positions in RSF 2022 World Press Freedom Index
- India’s ranking in the World Press Freedom Index 2022 has fallen down to 150th position from 142nd rank in 2021, out of 180 countries.
- Norway (1st), Denmark (2nd), Sweden (3rd) Estonia (4th) and Finland (5th) grabbed the top positions.
- North Korea remained at the bottom of the list.
- Pakistan was at 157th position, Sri Lanka at 146th, Bangladesh at 162nd, and Maynmar at 176th position.
Arvind Krishna elected to the Board of Federal Reserve Bank
- IBM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Arvind Krishna has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
- He will fill the vacancy in the office for the remaining portion of a three-year term ending December 31, 2023.
- He was previously the Senior Vice President of Cloud and Cognitive Software.
- He also headed IBM Research.
World Press Freedom Day: 3 May
- 3 May is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day.
- The day acts as a reminder for the government to uphold the right to freedom of expression.
- The day was declared in 1993.
- The declaration came after a recommendation was made in 1991 at the 26th General Conference session of UNESCO.
- The theme for 2022 is ‘Journalism under Digital Siege’.
AICF announces 20-member squad for Chess Olympiad
- All India Chess Federation (AICF) has announced the country’s biggest-ever 20- member squad for the 44th Chess Olympiad.
- India will host the tournament in Chennai from July 28 to August 10, 2022.
- India being the host is entitled to field two teams in Open category as well as the women’s category for the first-time ever.
- Viswanathan Anand will be the mentor of the Indian teams.
Kerala beats West Bengal to win Santosh Trophy
- Kerala lifted the Santosh Trophy for the seventh time, after beating Bengal in a penalty shootout, in May 2022.
- This is Kerala’s third win in a Santosh Trophy tournament on home soil.
- Earlier, they had won two editions in Kochi, in 1973-74 and 1992-93.
- Kerala captain Jijo Joseph was adjudged the player of the match.
Arunachal tops among states in GST revenue collection growth in April
- Arunachal Pradesh has recorded a GST collection of Rs 196 crore in April 2022, registering a year-on-year growth of 90 percent, the highest among states.
- The northeastern state had mopped up Rs 103 crore in 2021.
- The state had registered a 14 percent GST revenue growth in March 2022 with a collection of Rs 105 crore, up from Rs 92 crore in 2021.
International Firefighters Day: 4 May
- International Firefighters Day is observed on 4 May every year.
- It was first marked on May 4, 1999.
- It is a time when the world’s community can recognize and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible.
- The day was introduced by JJ Edmondson.
”Once Upon a Time in Calcutta” awarded at IFFLA
- Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s ”Once Upon a Time in Calcutta” bagged the top award of Grand Jury Prize for Best Feature Film at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA).
- Anmol Sidhu’s ”Jaggi” won the inaugural Uma da Cunha Award for best feature film debut, as well as the Audience Choice Award for best feature.
India’s 1st XE COVID mutant variant confirmed by INSACOG
- India’s first case of Omicron mutant variant XE has been confirmed by the Indian SARSCoV2 Genomics Sequencing Consortium (INSACOG).
- The XE variant is a “recombinant” virus that contains the mutations found in BA.1 as well as BA.2 variants of Omicron and was first discovered in the UK in Jan 2022.
- XE shows a slightly higher transmission rate and also a higher growth rate above that of BA.2.
New book titled “Leaders, Politicians, Citizens”
- “Leaders, Politicians, Citizens: Fifty Figures Who Influenced India’s Politics” authored by authorjournalist Rasheed Kidwai compiles stories of 50 personalities who influenced India’s political landscape.
- The book is published by Hachette India. The foreword of the book is written by Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).
- The 50 personalities featured in the book include Teji Bachchan, Phoolan Devi, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Jayalalithaa, APJ Abdul Kalam, and Karunanidhi among others.
New Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes
- Sangeeta Singh, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from the 1986 batch, has been appointed as Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), with effect from May 02, 2022.
- The Union Finance Ministry has issued an order stating that Sangeeta Singh will perform the duties and responsibilities of Chairperson, CBDT, in addition to her own duties, for a period of three months or until a regular chairman is chosen, whichever comes earlier.
- She was appointed after the incumbent chairman of the direct tax administration body, Jagannath Bidyadhar Mohapatra retired on April 30, 2022.
India’s 1st indigenous aircraft carrier
- India’s First Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), Indian Navy Ship (INS) Vikrant will be delivered to the Indian Navy by May, 2022 and will be commissioned on 15 August, 2022.
- The IAC has been constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The IAC will use ski-jump technology for launching the aircraft from the carrier. It costs around Rs 23,000 crore.
- The IAC is 262 metres long, 62 metres wide and it has a height of 59 metres and it has over 2,300 compartments. The warship will operate MiG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31 helicopters, and MH-60R multi-role helicopters.
India’s 1st indigenous hydrogen-fuelled electric vessel
- The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is set to build India’s first indigenous hydrogen-fuelled electric vessels at Cochin Shipyard Limited, Cochin, Kerala.
- The hydrogen fuel cell vessel based on Low-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Technology (LT-PEM) called Fuel Cell Electric Vessel (FCEV) is expected to cost around Rs 17.50 crore.
- 75% of the cost will be funded by the Government of India. This is a part of the transformative efforts of the Government of India on the innovative and new technology front on green energy, sustainable costeffective alternate fuel front.
First Chief Technology Officer of US Central Intelligence Agency
- Nand Mulchandani is the first Indian-origin person to be appointed as the first-ever Chief Technology Officer of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
- Mulchandani has more than 25 years of experience in Silicon Valley as well as the US Department of Defense (DoD).
- Mulchandani was most recently the CTO and Acting Director of the Department of Defense’s Joint Artificial Intelligence Center before joining the CIA.
