Dr Suman K Bery appointed as new Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog
- Suman K Bery has been appointed new Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog.
- He will take charge as Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog from 1 May 2022.
- Suman K Bery had earlier served as Director-General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) in New Delhi.
- NCAER is one of the country’s leading independent non-profit policy research institutions.
Estonia hosts the world’s largest cyber exercise
- The Tallinn-based NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) organised the Locked Shields 2022, in April 2022.
- It was the largest and most complex annual international live-fire cyber defence exercise in the world.
- At the exercise, cyber experts practised the protection of national civilian and military IT systems and critical infrastructure in a large – scale cyberattack.
Defence expert Vivek Lall to receive Entrepreneur Leadership Award
- Indian-American chief executive of General Atomics Global Corporation Vivek Lall has been selected for the Entrepreneur Leadership Awards by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC).
- IACC is the apex bi-lateral Chamber synergizing India-US economic engagement.
- He has been selected for the “Global Leader in Defence and Aviation Sector” award category.
Babita Singh named as the New Global Peace Ambassador 2022
- Serial entrepreneur Babita Singh has been conferred as a Global Peace Ambassador for promoting Peace through Education, Sports, Art, Culture, and Diplomacy.
- She was honored at the India International Conclave 2022 held in collaboration with Asia Africa Consortium (AAC), in April 2022.
- The AAC-Global Peace Ambassador 2022 honor is the highest honour bestowed on a global citizen.
Patrick Achi re-appointed as Prime Minister of Ivory Coast
- Patrick Achi has been reappointed as Prime Minister of Ivory Coast.
- He has been serving as the PM since 2021.
- He also earlier worked as the government spokesman for President Alassane Ouattara.
- Ivory Coast is a country on the southern coast of West Arica.
- Its capital is Yamoussoukro and its currency is West African CFA franc.
West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard announces retirement
- West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has announced his retirement from international cricket.
- Pollard, who was the captain of West Indies’ limited-overs teams played a total of 123 ODIs and 101 T20Is.
- He has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians team in the IPL for several years.
- The highlight of his international career is hitting six sixes in a T20I.
New vessel ‘Urja Pravaha’ inducted into Indian Coast Guard
- The Indian Coast Guard Ship (Auxiliary Barge) named Urja Pravaha has been inducted into the Indian Coast Guard at Gujarat’s Bharuch.
- It will be under the operational command of Coast Guard District Headquarters-4 (Kerala and Mahe).
- Urja Prabha is 36.96 meter long with draft of 1.85 meters.
- It is designed to cargo ship fuel, aviation fuel, and freshwater.
Anshu Malik and Radhika win silver at Asian Wrestling Championships
- At Asian Wrestling Championships at Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, Indian women wrestlers Anshu Malik and Radhika won silver in the 57kg and 65 kg freestyle categories on 22 April 2022.
- Manisha clinched bronze in the 62 kg women’s freestyle category defeating Korea’s Hanbit Lee 4-2.
- Anshu had also won a bronze in the 2020 edition and the 57kg class gold in Almaty in 2021.
NITI Aayog’s Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar steps down
- NITI Aayog’s Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar has stepped down after being at the helm of the institution for nearly five years.
- Kumar took charge on September 1, 2017, after his predecessor Arvind Panagariya resigned from the post.
- The post of the Vice-Chairman of the Aayog is co-terminus with the five-year term of the institution.
- Suman Bery will succeed him as the third Vice Chairman.
GAIIS witnesses Letter of Intents worth more than Rs.9000 crore
- Creating history, India’s first Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit (GAIIS) 2022 held in Gujarat witnessed letters of intents (LoIs) worth more than Rs.9000 crore.
- During the event, a total of 12 MoUs were also signed between the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda Sciences (CCRAS), the Ministry of Ayush and various prestigious research institutes in the country.
World Book and Copyright Day: 23 April
- World Book and Copyright Day is an annual event organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on 23 April.
- The event is observed in order to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
- The day marks the death anniversary of prominent authors like William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
AK Sood appointed as the Principal Scientific Advisor
- The government has appointed AK Sood as the Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to it.
- He succeeds Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan who was appointed to the PSA in 2018.
- Dr Sood is a member of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) and a physicist known for his work on graphene.
- He is a Distinguished Professor of Physics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
Prunus dinabandhuana
- Recently, Scientists from Manipur have found a new plant species of
- ‘Cherry Blossom’.
- It is a new plant species of ‘Cherry Blossom’.
- They have named the plant species as ‘Prunus dinabandhuana’ as a mark of respect and for the outstanding contributions of scientist Dr Dinabandhu Sahoo.
Earth Day
- World Earth Day 2022 was observed with main theme as “Invest In Our Planet”.
- Earth Day was first observed in 1970 when 20 million took to the streets to protest environmental degradation on the call of US Senator Gaylord Nelson.
- The event was triggered by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill, as well as other issues such as smog and polluted rivers.
- In 2009, the United Nations designated 22nd April as ‘International Mother Earth Day.
India’s first bus service with fully digital ticketing facility
- India’s first bus service with ‘tap in, tap out’ or fully digital ticketing facility inaugurated by Maharashtra Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray.
- The service was inaugurated on one of the BEST buses that travel in Gateway of India to Churchgate route, with plans to spread it to all 438 routes in the near future.
- A passenger will have to ‘Tap In’ his Chalo smartcard or the Chalo mobile app in front of the machine placed at the entry to use the ‘Tap In, Tap Out’ service.
Pfizer’s Paxlovid Covid antiviral pill
- The World Health Organization on April 22, 2022 “strongly recommended” Pfizer’s Paxlovid Covid antiviral pill for mild COVID cases with high risk of hospitalisation.
- Paxlovid is an oral covid antiviral pill developed by Pfizer that can be taken at home by high-risk covid patients with mild infection, preventing the need for hospitalisation.
- It is a combination of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir and is easier to administer in comparison to intravenous remdesivir and antibodies.
- The pill is reportedly a better choice of treatment for the unvaccinated and elderly and immunocompromised people with COVID-19, as per WHO experts.
First Conference of Incredible India International Cruise Conference 2022
- Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH, has announced the First Conference of Incredible India International Cruise Conference 2022 will be held on May 14-15, 2022 organised by the Mumbai Port Authority.
- He also launched the event website www.iiicc2022.in, logo and mascot named ‘Captain Cruzo’.
- The iconic sea-cruise terminal coming up at BPX Indira Dock Mumbai International Cruise Terminal is expected to be commissioned by 2024.
Invictus Games 2022
- The 2022 edition of the Invictus Games is held in The Hague, Netherlands.
- During the inaugural event, Prince Harry paid tribute to the Ukrainian team.
- The first edition of the Games was held in London in 2014 and the 2023 edition will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany.
- The Invictus Games are an international sporting competition meant for wounded and sick military service personnel and war veterans.
