Three Chinese astronauts back on Earth after 183 days in space
- Three Chinese astronauts, the second team sent to orbit for space station construction, returned to Earth on 16 April 2022 after completing a landmark six-month mission.
- It was the longest stay in space by Chinese astronauts on a single mission.
- The return capsule of the Shenzhou-13 manned spaceship was carrying astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu.
Vedaant Madhavan wins silver medal at Danish Open swimming meet
- Vedaant Madhavan bagged a silver medal in the men’s 1500m freestyle event at the Danish Open swimming meet in Copenhagen, Denmark, in April 2022.
- Vedaant, son of Indian actor R Madhavan, clocked 15.57.86 to finish second in the 10-swimmer final.
- He had earlier won a bronze medal at the Latvia Open in March 2021, and seven medals at the Junior National Aquatic Championships.
World Voice Day: 16 April
- World Voice Day is celebrated on April 16 every year.
- The day aims to demonstrate the enormous importance of the voice in the daily lives of all people.
- In 1999, the Brazilian Society of Laryngology and Voice under the chairmanship of Dr Nedio Steffen first celebrated the day as Brazilian Voice Day on 16 April.
Prabhat Patnaik selected for Malcolm Adiseshiah Award 2022
- Renowned Indian economist and political commentator Prabhat Patnaik has been selected for the 2022 Malcolm Adiseshiah Award.
- The award is annually given by the Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust to an outstanding social scientist selected from nominations received by a specially constituted national jury.
- The award comprises a citation and prize money of ₹2 lakh.
PM Modi unveils a 108 ft statue of Lord Hanuman statue in Gujarat
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 108 feet statue of Lord Hanuman in Gujarat’s Morbi on 16 April 2022.
- The statue is the second of the four statues being built in the four directions across the country, as part of the ‘Hanumanji Char Dham’
- The first statue of the series was set up in the north in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla in 2010.
- The third statue would come up at Rameswaram
40th edition of Hunar Haat begins in Mumbai on 16 April 2022
- The 40th edition of Hunar Haat began in Mumbai, on 16 April 2022.
- The 12-day event organized by the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs is aimed at providing exposure and employment opportunities to artisans and craftsmen from across the country.
- The tag line for the event is ‘Confluence of Craft, Cuisine and Culture’.
UDAN scheme selected for Prime Minister’s Award
- Civil Aviation Ministry flagship Regional Connectivity Scheme – ‘Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik’, UDAN has been selected for Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2020.
- It will be awarded under the category Innovation (General) – Central.
- The Ministry of Civil Aviation will receive the award on 21 April 2022, that is, Civil Service Day.
India wins the bid to host Harvard’s HPAIR ACONF 2022 in New Delhi
- The Harvard College Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) has announced that India will be the host country for HPAIR ACONF 2022 in New Delhi.
- HPAIR is a Harvard University-based student organization that operates the largest student-run conference in Asia.
- The objective of the conference is to create a forum that will connect young professionals with global leaders.
Tamil Nadu CM announces celebrating April 14 as ‘Equality Day’
- Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin has announced that Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary on 14 April will be observed as the ‘Day of Equality’ or ‘Samathuva Naal’.
- He also announced that the selected works of Ambedkar will be translated into Tamil.
- A pledge will also be administered on that day.
- A full-sized bronze statue of Ambedkar will be erected in the Ambedkar memorial in Chennai.
IBBI to launch 3rd National Online Quiz on 16 April 2022
- The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) in collaboration with MyGov. And BSE Investors’ Protection Fund is conducting the ‘3rd National Online Quiz on Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016’.
- It will promote awareness and understanding of the Code among various stakeholders, across the country.
- The Quiz is open from 16th April 2022 to 15th May 2022
Orleans Masters 2022
- In Badminton, India’s Mithun Manjunath lost to Toma Junior Popov of France, 21-11, 21-19, in the finals of the Orleans Masters 2022 to settle for a Silver Medal.
- This was the first-ever BWF Super 100 final match played by Mithun Manjunath.
laser missile-defence system ‘Iron Beam’
- Israel successfully tested a new laser missile-defence system ‘Iron Beam’ which can destroy any airborne object including drones.
- Iron Beam is the world’s first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser beam to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets, mortars, long range missiles, anti-tank missiles etc.
K K Patel Super Speciality Hospital
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation, a 200-bed K K Patel Super Speciality Hospital in Bhuj in Kutch district of Gujarat, via video-conferencing on April 15, 2022.
- This hospital has been built by Shree Kutchi Leva Patel Samaj, Bhuj and is the first charitable super speciality hospital in Kutch region.
- It will guarantee quality medical treatment for people of Kutch including lakhs of soldiers, par military personnel and traders.
20th edition of India and France Joint Staff talks
- The 20th edition of India and France Joint Staff talks was held in Paris on April 12-13, 2022.
- The focus of the meeting was on new initiatives under the existing bilateral defence cooperation mechanism and strengthening ongoing bilateral defence engagements.
- The meeting was co-chaired by Assistant Chief of Integrated Staff and Air Vice Marshal B Manikantan and Head of Bilateral Cooperation South/Staff HQ Brigadier General Eric Peltier.
Microplastic in Cauvery River
- A study led by experts from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, discovered that Microplastics and other contaminants may be causing growth abnormalities and skeletal deformities in fish in the Cauvery River.
- In the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the Cauvery provides a source of drinking water for humans and animals, as well as agriculture.
- Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety is the publication where the research was published.
