World Bank approves $47mn for India’s Mission Karmayogi program
- The World Bank has approved a USD 47 million project to support the Government of India’s Mission Karmayogi.
- Mission Karmayogi is a national program to build civil service capacity.
- The financing will focus on three components: the development and implementation of competency frameworks; the development of an integrated learning platform; and program monitoring, evaluation, and management.
Former women’s hockey team captain Elvera Britto passes away
- Former Indian women’s hockey team captain Elvera Britto passed away in April 2022.
- Elvera ruled the domestic circuit from 1960 to 1967, guiding Karnataka to seven national titles.
- She represented India against Australia, Sri Lanka and Japan.
- In 1965, Elvera became only the second woman hockey player to be conferred with the Arjuna Award after Anne Lumsden (1961).
EAM S Jaishankar embarks on 3-day visit to Bangladesh, Bhutan
- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar embarked on a 3-day visit to Bangladesh and Bhutan from 28 April 2022.
- In Bangladesh, Dr. Jaishankar will call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Dhaka.
- He will also hold discussions with Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen.
- His last visit to Bangladesh was in March 2021.
- He will be Bhutan’s first high-level visitor from abroad since March 2020.
World Day for Safety and Health at Work: 28 April
- World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed on 28 April every year.
- The day promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.
- It also focuses on enhancing social dialogue towards a culture of safety and health.
- The theme for 2022 is “Act together to build a positive health and safety culture”.
Russia stripped of 2023 world ice hockey championship
- The 2023 ice hockey world championship will be moved from Russia.
- This was informed by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).
- The federation had already stripped Russia of the junior world championship for the same reason.
- The tournament was awarded to Russia in 2018 and was due to be held from May 5-21, 2023 in Saint Petersburg.
India launches Digital India RISC-V (DIR-V) program
- Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced Digital India RISC-V Microprocessor (DIR-V) Program on 27 April 2022.
- It has been launched with an overall aim to enable the creation of microprocessors for the future in India.
- DIR-V will see partnerships between startups, academia, and multinationals, to make India not only a RISC-V Talent Hub for the world but also supplier of RISC-V SoC (System on Chips).
Narayan Rane inaugurates “Enterprise India”
- Union Minister for MSME Narayan Rane inaugurated the Ministry’s month-long mega event “Enterprise India” under the celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, on 27 April 2022.
- It will promote entrepreneurship culture and create awareness about the schemes and initiatives of the Ministry of MSME.
- Some of the key activities include conferences with Industry Associations, etc.
Cabinet approves signing of MoU between India and Chile
- The Union Cabinet has approved the signing of an MoU between India and Chile for cooperation in the disability sector.
- MoU provides the mechanism for funding to cover expenses for the activities under it.
- The expenses for such activities will be mutually decided by both the government on a case-to-case basis subject to the availability of funds and resources.
ONGC ties up with Norway’s Equinor for clean energy
- Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has signed an MoU with Equinor ASA, the Norwegian state-owned multinational energy company.
- It has been signed for collaboration in areas of upstream exploration and production, midstream, downstream and clean energy options.
- The MoU is valid for two years under which both companies have agreed to work together in the areas identified.
MoU between India and Chile for cooperation in Disability Sector
- The Union Cabinet of India approved the signing of the MoU between India and Chile for cooperation in Disability Sector.
- Chile is a country in the western part of South America.
- It occupies a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
- It is the world’s southernmost country, the closest to Antarctica, that is geographically on the mainland. The country’s capital and largest city is Santiago.
New Indian Mission in Lithuania
- The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accorded approval to the opening of a new Indian Mission in Lithuania in 2022.
- Lithuania is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe.
- It is one of three Baltic states and lies on the eastern shore of the Baltic Sea.
- Its capital and largest city is Vilnius.
World’s First Country to stop COVID-19 vaccination programme
- Denmark has become the first country in the world to suspend the COVID-19 vaccination programme.
- Danish Health Authority said that the epidemic has been brought under control and that the country was in a “good position”.
- Around 81 percent of Denmark’s 5.8 million population have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 61.6 percent have received the booster dose as well.
- Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the pandemic is far from over, calling for countries to maintain surveillance.
Workers’ Memorial Day
- The Workers’ Memorial Day, also known as International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers occurs every year on 28 April.
- The day has been organized worldwide by the International Trade Union Confederation since 1996.
- Theme 2022: ‘Make occupational health and safety a fundamental right at work.’
