Chhindwara’s oranges get new identity, named Satpuda
- Oranges grown in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district will now have a distinct identity of their own from the ones produced in Nagpur.
- They will be called Satpuda orange under the ”one district one produce” scheme of the government.
- The authorities have also created a QR code for the fruit, which will reveal all the information about the variety, the moment someone scans the code.
Haryana wins 12th Senior Men’s National Hockey Championship
- Haryana were crowned the champions of the 12th Senior Men’s National Hockey Championship here, beating Tamil Nadu 3-1 in the shootout after the final ended 1-1 in the regulation time, on 17 April 2022.
- Haryana won the trophy for the first time since 2011.
- Karnataka prevailed over Maharashtra 4-3 in the third/fourth place classification match.
BRO to build world’s highest tunnel at 16,580 feet
- The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will construct the world’s highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass, which will connect Himachal Pradesh to Zanskar Valley in Ladakh.
- The tunnel will be constructed at a height of 16,580 feet.
- The Centre has already made ‘Project Yojak’ of BRO to execute this ambitious project.
- This was informed by BRO Director General Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhary
ONGC appoints Pomila Jaspal as the Director (Finance) and CFO
- Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has appointed Pomila Jaspal as the Director (Finance) and Chief Financial Officer with immediate effect.
- Prior to being appointed as the Director (Finance) of ONGC, Jaspal served as the Director (Finance) at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited.
- She was the first-ever woman Functional Director on the board of MRPL.
83rd Senior National Table Tennis Championship begins
- In Meghalaya, the 83rd Senior National Table Tennis Championship began on 19 Apr’22 at SAI Indoor Stadium, NEHU, Shillong.
- The event is being organised by the Meghalaya Table Tennis Associations in collaboration with the Dept of Sports Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya under the aegis of the Table Tennis Federation of India.
- Around 450 players from 36 different teams are participating.
Senior Asian Wrestling Championship begins in Mongolia
- The senior Asian Wrestling Championship began on 19 April 2022 in Mongolia.
- 30 Indian wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia, will participate in the event.
- A total of 20 wrestlers from the men’s team across the Freestyle and GrecoRoman categories and 10 from the women’s team are participating in the event.
President gives assent to Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act
- President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022.
- The objective of the Act is to authorize for taking measurements of convicts and other persons for the purposes of identification and investigation in criminal matters and to preserve records.
- The new Act has replaced the Identification of Prisoners Act, of 1920.
Lt Gen Manoj Pande named as India’s next Chief of Army Staff
- Lieutenant General Manoj Pande has been appointed as the next Chief of Army Staff.
- He will take over from General Manoj Naravane.
- Lt Gen Manoj Pande is the first-ever officer from the Corps of Engineers to be appointed as Army Chief.
- He has served as chief engineer in the UN mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea and commander in chief Andaman and Nicobar Command
India, Finland to establish Virtual Network Centre
- India and Finland will establish an IndoFinnish Virtual Network Centre on Quantum Computing.
- It will attempt to stimulate innovative research and development projects to address needs of both nations.
- The Indian side has identified three premier institutes, IIT-Madras, IISERPune and C-DAC-Pune, for the Virtual Network Centre on Quantum Computing.
AIMA honours Shoojit Sircar with Director of the Year award
- Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, presented the 2021 AIMA Managing India Awards (AIMA) in multiple categories in Delhi, in April 2022.
- In the films category, Shoojit Sircar was honoured with the Director of the Year award for ‘Sardar Udham’.
- The award recognises an individual “who has exemplified the spirit of filmmaking and created a masterpiece out of it”.
National Cyber Security Incident Response Exercise held
- Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor, inaugurated the National Cyber Security Incident Response Exercise on 18 April 2022.
- National Cyber Exercise (NCX) India will be conducted as a hybrid exercise over a period of ten days till 29 April 2022.
- The program is being conducted by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) supported by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
IIT Madras hosts Industry Conclave to showcase research initiatives
- IIT Madras organized the Industry Conclave 2022 on April 16 and 17, 2022.
- It was organized to showcase the research and innovations of the institute to the government, industry, and corporate firms.
- A virtual exhibition of research projects, start-ups, and projects of the institute’s Center for Innovation (CFI) and other projects was also created for the occasion.
World Liver Day: 19 April
- World Liver Day is observed on the 19th of April every year to spread awareness about liver health.
- The liver is a vital organ of the body which helps to flush out the unwanted toxins from the body.
- It is the second-largest part of the body and is less complex than the brain.
- It is said that it performs almost 500 body functions and holds 13 per cent of the total blood supply.
GE partners with TIDCO to set up centre of excellence in Tamil Nadu
- US-based aircraft engine manufacturer GE has partnered with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).
- It will set up a centre of excellence in Tamil Nadu on emerging aviation engine technologies.
- It will work towards technology development of aviation engine parts.
- An investment of about Rs 141.26 crore over 5 years was proposed to be funded by TIDCO and GE in two phases.
RailTel Corporation bags work order from Rail Vikas Nigam
- RailTel Corporation of India has received a work order from Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) aggregating ₹11.57 crore.
- RailTel will install Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in 33 locations of RVNL.
- Under the agreement, MPLS VPN networks services will be created and maintained by RailTel at 33 locations of RVNL.
- The services will be provided for 5 years.
National Cyber Security Incident Response Exercise (NCX India)
- Recently, the National Security Council Secretariat organised the National Cyber Security Incident Response Exercise (NCX India).
- National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) in association with Data Security Council of India (DSCI) as the knowledge partner and supported by the Defence Research and Development Organization(DRDO).
- It aims to train senior management and technical personnel of Government/Critical Sector organizations and agencies on contemporary cyber threats and handling cyber incidents and response.
Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission
- The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has granted one year extension to Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas.
- The extension in service to Vyas for a period of one year beyond May 3, 2022 or “until further orders”.
- This is the second extension for Vyas, he was first appointed to the post in September 2018.
- Awards: The Indian Nuclear Society Outstanding Service Award 2011; The Homi Bhabha Science and Technology Award 2006, and DAE Award 2007
Largest consumer of Gold
- According to the official data, the import of gold in India has been rose by 33.34% to ₹46.14 billion on account of higher demand in 2021-22.
- The import of gold in 2020-21 was about ₹34.62 billion. The increase in gold imports has contributed to the widening of the trade deficit to $192.41 billion, against $102.62 billion in 2020-21.
- India is the world’s second-biggest gold consumer after China. The imports are largely driven by the jewellery industry. The export of gems and jewellery grew by about 50% to about $39 billion during 2021- 22.
