Mandeep Singh wins North India Bodybuilding C’ship in Panchkula

  • Mandeep Singh, from Chandigarh, was declared the overall winner in the Bodybuilding North India and Tricity competition category at the 2nd edition of “NPC North India and Mr Tricity” bodybuilding and physique championship.
  • It was held in Panchkula on 17 April 2022.
  • The mega event was organised by the National Physique Committee (NPC) North India.

US intelligence satellite launched from California

  • A classified satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office was launched into space from California on 17 April 2022.
  • The NROL-85 satellite lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard a two-stage SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
  • It was the first mission by the NRO to reuse a SpaceX rocket booster.
  • The NRO is the government agency in charge of developing US satellites.

World Hemophilia Day: 17 April

  • World Hemophilia Day is observed every year on April 17.
  • The day marks the birthday of Frank Schnabel who was the founder of the World Federation of Hemophilia.
  • The theme for 2022 is ‘Access for All: Partnership. Policy. Progress. Engaging your government, integrating inherited bleeding disorders into national policy.’

World Heritage Day: 18 April

  • World Heritage Day, also known as International Day for Monuments and Sites, is observed on April 18.
  • The day was first celebrated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1983.
  • The aim is to promote awareness about the cultural heritage and diversity on the planet.
  • The theme for World Heritage Day 2022 is “Heritage and Climate”.

Legendary Odia Musician Prafulla Kar passes away

  • Legendary Odia singer and music director Prafulla Kar passed away in April 2022.
  • He was popular for his numerous songs including ‘Kamala Desha Rajakumara’.
  • He had received the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2015 and was honoured with Jayadeva award in 2004.
  • He had received the state film award eight times, six times in a row.

Sajan Prakash wins gold medal at Danish Open swimming meet

  • Sajan Prakash won a gold medal in men’s 200m butterfly event at the Danish Open swimming meet in Copenhagen, Denmark, in April 2022.
  • Competing in his first international meet for 2022, Prakash stopped the clock at 1.59.27.
  • Shakthi Balakrishnan finished second in the ‘B’ Final and eight overall in the women’s 400m medley.
  • The Danish Open 2022 is being held in Copenhagen from 15-19 April.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar becomes first to scalp 150 wickets in IPL

  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar on 17 Apr’22, became the first Indian pacer to reach the milestone of 150 wickets in the Indian Premier League history.
  • He achieved the feat while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2022 match against Punjab Kings at Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.
  • After Dwayne Bravo (174) and Lasith Malinga (170), Kumar is overall just the third pacer to bag 150 wickets in IPL.

DG, NMCG participates in Singapore International Water Week 2022

  • Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) G. Asok Kumar participated virtually in Singapore International Water Week, Water Convention 2022, in April 2022.
  • He gave a presentation on ‘Status of Wastewater Generation, Treatment and Management in India: Success Through NMCG Initiatives.’
  • He also gave an overview of the Namami Gange Programme

Poverty in India declined 12.3 percentage points : World Bank

  • The poverty in India is 12.3% points lower in 2019 as compared to 2011.
  • The poverty headcount rate has declined from 22.5% in 2011 to 10.2% in 2019.
  • According to a policy research working paper by the World Bank, poverty reduction was higher in rural areas as compared to urban India.
  • Rural poverty dropped by 14.7% while urban poverty declined by 7.9% points from 2011 to 2019.

Army Commanders’ biannual Conference to be held from 18 April 2022

  • Army Commanders’ Conference is scheduled for 18 April 2022 in New Delhi.
  • It is an apex-level biannual event that is held in April and October every year.
  • During the five-day conference, the senior leadership of the Indian Army will review the operational situation along the active borders, assess threats in the entire spectrum of conflict and undertake an analysis of capability voids

WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) to be inaugurated

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) in Jamnagar, during his 3-day trip to Gujarat from 18 April 2022.
  • GCTM will be the first and only global outpost centre for traditional medicine across the world.
  • He will also inaugurate Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit in Gandhinagar.

India’s first radio channel for visually-impaired people launched

  • The country’s first-ever radio channel for the visually impaired, named ‘Radio Aksh’ has been launched in Nagpur.
  • The Blind Relief Association Nagpur and Samdrushti Kshamata Vikas Avam Anusandhan Mandal (Saksham) are the pioneers of the concept.
  • It will help the visually-impaired gain seamless access to education resources and audiobooks.

108 ft statue of Lord Hanuman

  • The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has unveiled a 108 ft statue of Lord Hanuman in Morbi, Gujarat, at the Ashram of Bapu Keshvanand ji, via video conferencing on April 16, 2022, on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.
  • This statue is the second among the four statues being built in the four directions across the country, as part of the ‘Hanumanji Char Dham’ project.
  • The first such grand statue of Hanuman Ji was inaugurated in the North in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh in
  • The third statue will be set up in the South at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.

Official digital payments partner for the prime ministers’ museum

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, or Prime Ministers’ Museum, in New Delhi, to honour the efforts of all 14 Indian Prime Ministers since independence, regardless of ideology or duration in office.
  • Paytm has become an official digital payments partner for the prime ministers’ museum. It is offering its payment gateway, EDC (Electronic Data Capture) machines and QR code payment options to make way for superfast, convenient and secure transactions.
  • The museum, which is a tribute to former Prime Ministers of India, will be opened to the public on April 21,
  • PM Modi also purchased the first ticket of the museum before its inauguration.

Northeast India’s Highest National Flag

  • During the 78th anniversary of Flag Hoisting Day, CM of Manipur N Biren Singh said that a 165 ft tall national flag would be installed at INA headquarters at Moirang, Manipur.
  • This would be the highest flag in the northeast region.
  • On 3 February 2022, CM of Arunachal Pradesh Pema Khandu hoisted a 104ft tall National flag at Buddha Park in Tawang, the second-highest in terms of altitude (10,000 ft).
  • Currently, Belagavi or Belgaum Fort in Kote Kere, Karnataka has the highest national flag at 361ft (highest in India). It was inaugurated in 2018 followed by a 360 ft national flag installed at the Attari border, Punjab.

First state to develop Migration tracking system (MTS) application

  • The Maharashtra government has developed a websitebased migration tracking system (MTS) application to map the movement of vulnerable seasonal migrant workers.
  • The state Women and Child Development Department launched it as a pilot project in November last year in six districts with high tribal population.
  • It aims for tracing and porting of ICDS facilities to anganwadi beneficiaries during their seasonal migration.
