World Parkinson’s Day: 11 April

  • World Parkinson’s Day is observed annually on April 11 to spread awareness about the neurodegenerative disease.
  • The disease has a wide range of symptoms from shaking, stiffness, balance and coordination issues to difficulty in walking.
  • The day also marks the anniversary of James Parkinson who wrote the article An Essay on the Shaking Palsy in 1817, recognizing the disease for the 1st time.

Charles Leclerc wins Australian F1 Grand Prix

  • Charles Leclerc dominated the Australian Grand Prix on 10 April to win for the second time in
  • Sergio Perez finished second and Mercedes’ George Russell finished third.
  • Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth and sixth respectively.
  • Formula 1 now heads to Italy for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on April 24, followed by the inaugural Miami Grand Prix on May 8,

India bags 10 medals at the Thailand Open boxing

  • Amit Panghal and Ashish Kumar settled for silver medals in the men’s 52kg and 81kg events, respectively, at the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament 2022 in Phuket on 9 April
  • India finished the tournament with 10 medals – 3 gold, 4 silver and 3
  • Govind Sahani (men’s 48kg), Ananta Pralhad Chopde (men’s 54kg) and Sumit Kundu (men’s 75kg) were the three gold medal winners.

Birth anniversary of Jyotiba Phule: 11 April

  • Jyotiba Phule was born on 11 April
  • He was a social activist from Maharashtra who worked for the abolition of the caste system and untouchability and for the upliftment of women.
  • He started his first school for girls in 1848 in Pune.
  • He also founded the Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of Truth Seekers) to fight for those people who belonged to the lower castes

Indigenously developed loitering munitions tested at 15,000 feet

  • Indigenously designed and developed, three different types of loitering munitions were successfully tested in Ladakh in March
  • The Army Design Bureau facilitated trials at Nubra Valley to rate performance and safety standards.
  • They have been developed by Economic Explosives Ltd in partnership with Bangalore-based start-up Z Motion Autonomous System Pvt Ltd

Gujarat tops NITI Aayog’s State Energy and Climate Index

  • Gujarat has topped the Niti Aayog’s State Energy and Climate Index-Round 1 (SECI) among larger states.
  • Gujarat was followed by Kerala and Punjab.
  • Among the smaller states, Goa topped the Aayog’s index, followed by Tripura and Manipur.
  • The index is aimed at ranking states and Union territories (UTs) on six parameters including discoms’ performance, energy efficiency, etc

HAL signs contract with Nigerian Army for Phase II training on Chetak

  • The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has signed a contract with Nigerian Army.
  • It has been signed for imparting PhaseII flying training on Chetak Helicopter for six officers of Nigerian Army Aviation.
  • This marks the continuation of the contract signed in April 2021 for imparting Phase-I flying training to six Nigerian Army Aviation officers, which was successfully executed in December

Meenakshi Lekhi inaugurates INDIA Alumni portal

  • Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi on 9 April 2022, inaugurated the INDIA Alumni portal to facilitate foreign scholars who have studied in the country to remain connected.
  • It was launched by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
  • Some foreign scholars were also provided with alumni ID cards.
  • The portal can be accessed at ”http://www.iccr.almaconnect.com”

President inaugurates 5-day Madhavpur Ghed fair in Porbandar

  • President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated a five-day fair at Madhavpur Ghed village in Gujarat’s Porbandar district, on 10 April 2022.
  • This fair is held to celebrate the wedding of Lord Krishna and Goddess Rukmani at Madhavpur Ghed, a famous pilgrimage spot.
  • The famous Madhavray temple was originally built in this village in the 13th century.

NCPCR to celebrate Pariksha Parv 4.0 from 11 April to 31 May 2022

  • The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) will be celebrating Pariksha Parv- 4.0 from 11 April to 31 May 2022.
  • It is an endeavour for providing a platform for students, parents and teachers to share their thoughts and get guidance and important tips from the experts
  • It also includes SAMVEDNA (1800-121- 2830), a toll-free tele counselling service of NCPCR to help students.

India wins Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles Squash titles in Glasgow

  • Dipika Pallikal won the women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles with Joshna Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal, respectively at the World Doubles Squash Championships in Glasgow on 9 April 2022.
  • Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal defeated England’s Adrian Waller and Alison Waters 11-6, 11-8 in the final at the Scotstoun Leisure Centre.
  • They became India’s first-ever World Doubles squash champions

4th India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue begins on 11 April 2022

  • The fourth India-US 2+ 2 Ministerial Dialogue will be held on 11 April 2022.
  • The Indian delegation is being led by Home Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister Jaishankar.
  • The US will be represented by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defence Llyod Austin.
  • The last 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between the two countries was held in October 2020 in New Delhi.

National Safe Motherhood Day: 11 April

  • National Safe Motherhood Day is observed on April 11 every year.
  • It promotes awareness about the importance of having proper access for pregnant women to healthcare.
  • The campaign was launched by the White Ribbon Alliance (WRAI).
  • India was once considered one of the world’s most dangerous countries to give birth as it contributed to 15% of all maternal deaths globally.

National Siblings Day

  • National Siblings Day is celebrated every year on April 10. It commemorates the importance of having siblings in our lives and the bond we share with them.
  • Siblings Day is celebrated in many parts of the world like United Kingdom, Australia, India, etc. but is not federally recognized.
  • In India, the occasion of Raksha Bandhan celebrates the special bond between the siblings.
  • Three U.S. presidents have recognized the event — most recently, President Obama in 2016. The “Siblings Day Foundation”, sponsors of this day, gained non-profit status in 1999. They are working on establishing a United Nations resolution for an International Siblings Day.

First state to include e-Cycles in its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy

  • Delhi government included electric cycles under its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy and announced that it will offer a subsidy of 5,500 each to the first 10,000 buyers.
  • This will include both passenger and cargo e-cycles with a speed of less than 25 km/hour.
  • The first 10,000 buyers will get 25 per cent of the purchase incentive on buying the e-cycle

Nurse to population ratio in India in 2022

  • In India, the current ratio of nurses per 1000 population stands at 1.96 : 1000.
  • This was reported to the Rajya Sabha by the Union Health ministry.
  • As per the records of the Indian Nursing Council, there is around 33.41 lakh registered nursing personnel in India.
  • This includes 23,40,501 registered midwives and nurses, 56,854 lady health visitors, and 10,00,805 nurse associates (9,43,951 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives).
  • As of November 2021, in the country, there are 13,01,319 allopathic doctorswho are registered with the National Medical Commission and the State Medical Councils as of November 2021.

European Commission Geographical Indication Tag

  • Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Tea will soon get a European Commission Geographical Indication Tag (GI Tag); this tag helps Kangra tea to get an opportunity to enter the European market.
  • Kangra tea received the Indian GI tag in 2005. Since 1999, the cultivation and development of tea have improved constantly in the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh.
  • The development and cultivation of Kangra tea is being promoted and looked after by four departments iTea Board of India Regional office Palampur, cooperative and agriculture departments of the state and CSIR, IHB

O.Henry Prize

  • Amar Mitra won the prestigious O. Henry Prize for Short Fiction.
  • He received the award for his short story “The Old Man of Kusumpur” originally written in Bengali with the title “Gaonburo”. He is one of the 20 winners of the award.
  • Gaonburo was written by Amar Mitra in 1977 in Bengali and was published in Amrita Patrika.
  • Anish Gupta, a senior journalist, translated this story into English and it was published last year in the web magazine ‘The Common’.
  • Amar Mitra has earlier also received the Sahitya AkademiAward and BankimPuraskar

World’s largest producer and exporter of Palm Oil

  • Indonesia is the World’s largest producer and exporter of Palm Oil.
  • At present, the country is facing a palm oil crisis, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • Indonesia requires its exporters to set aside 30 per cent of palm oil products for domestic use, up from the previous 20 per cent, to tackle the shortage.
  • Massive price spikes for food and energy caused by Ukraine War will push over 40 million people into extreme poverty.
  • India, the World’s biggest buyer of edible oil, relies on Indonesia for over half of its palm oil imports

New Chairman of UPSC

  • Academician and former Vice Chancellor, Dr Manoj Soni has been appointed as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) with effect from April 05,
  • He succeeds Pradip Kumar Joshi.
  • Dr Soni will have a tenure of upto June 27, 2023
  • He had earlier served as the Vice-chancellor of two universities, namely Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University and MSU of Baroda.
