International Snow Leopard Day – Important facts
- Observed on = 23 October every year.
- International Day = International Day of the Snow Leopard.
- First celebrated = 23 October 2013, following the Global Forum on the Conservation of the Snow Leopard held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
- UN recognition = The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day in 2024 through Resolution A/RES/79/143.
- Purpose = To raise awareness and strengthen international cooperation for snow leopard conservation and the protection of mountain ecosystems.
About the snow leopard
- Scientific name = Panthera uncia
- Common name = Ghost of the Mountains.
- Family = Felidae (cat family).
- Habitat = High-altitude mountain regions of Central and South Asia.
- Distribution = Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
- Nature = Solitary, elusive and well adapted to cold, rugged mountain environments.
- Ecological role = An apex predator that helps maintain the balance of mountain ecosystems.
Key Adaptations
- Extra-large paws = Act as natural snowshoes, distributing body weight to prevent sinking.
- Thick, long tail = Provides dynamic balance on sheer cliffs and wraps around the face/body for insulation during sleep.
- Short ears & wide nasal cavity = Minimizes heat loss while pre-warming frigid, thin mountain air before entering lungs.
- Vocalization = Unlike other big cats (Panthera species), snow leopards cannot roar due to different vocal cord structures; they communicate through purrs, hisses, and chuffs.
