World Cotton Day – Basic Facts
- Observed on = 7 October every year.
- First observed = 7 October 2019.
- Purpose = To highlight the importance of cotton as a global commodity and its contribution to livelihoods, employment, trade and economic development.
- Initiative = The observance originated from the “Cotton Four” (C-4) countries—Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali.
- Recognised by = United Nations.

- The C-4 countries are major cotton-producing countries in West Africa.
- The C-4 Nations = Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali.
Cotton in India – Important Facts
- India is one of the world’s major cotton-producing countries.
- Cotton is a major Kharif crop in India.
- Major cotton-growing states include = Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu
- Cotton is known as “White Gold” because of its economic importance.
- Gossypium is the botanical genus of cotton.
Genetically Modified (GM) Cotton
- Bt Cotton (carrying Bacillus thuringiensis genes Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab) remains the only commercialised GM crop approved in India (approved in 2002 by the GEAC).
- Major biological pest targeted = Pink Bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella).
