English Language Day: 23 April
- English Language day is observed, annually, on April 23.
- The date happens to be the birth and death anniversary of well-known writer William Shakespeare.
- English Language Day is the result of a 2010 initiative by the Department of Global Communications.
- It is celebrated internationally as the UN Observance Day to propagate harmonious communication.
Khelo India University Games 2021 begin on 24 April 2022
- Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu declared the second Khelo India University Games 2021 open at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium, Bengaluru on 24 April 2022.
- The games are being hosted by Jain University with support from the Karnataka State Government and the Sports Authority of India.
- About 3879 competitors from 200-plus universities will be participating in 20 disciplines.
NMDC wins first position in four categories at PRSI Awards 2022
- The National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (NMDC) won the first position in four categories at the Public Relations Awards 2022 conferred by Public Relations Society of India (PRSI).
- NMDC Limited is a government-owned mineral producer.
- It is involved in the exploration of iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, etc.
National Panchayati Raj Day: 24 April
- National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on 24 April annually.
- This annual celebration is done in order to commemorate the historic day on which the Constitution Act (73rd Amendment) was passed in 1992.
- However, it came into existence a year later on April 24, 1993.
- Then PM Manmohan Singh declared the first National Panchayati Raj Day on 24 April 2010.
Cyrus Poonawalla becomes richest healthcare billionaire in the world
- Cyrus Poonawalla, the founder of Serum Institute of India, is the richest billionaire in the healthcare sector in 2022, according to Hurun Global Healthcare Rich List 2022.
- He has a net worth of $26 billion.
- The second richest healthcare billionaire globally is Thomas Frist Jr and family.
- The third and fourth on the list are from China — Li Xiting and Xu Hang of Mindray.
India gets elected to 4 United Nations ECOSOC bodies
- India has been elected to four United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) bodies.
- The bodies include the Commission for Social Development, Committee on NGOs, Commission on Science & Technology for Development, and Committee for Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.
- The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations.
World Book Capital for the year 2022 by UNESCO
- Guadalajara, Mexico was named World Book Capital for the year 2022 by the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, on the recommendation of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee.
- The city, already a UNESCO Creative City since 2017, was selected for its comprehensive plan for policies around the book to trigger social change, combat violence and build a culture of peace.
- As a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Guadalajara has supported its local talents and advancing creative industries through initiatives that places media arts at the core of their programmes including in its world-famous International Book Fair.
John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award 2022
- The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, for the first time ever, awarded the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award 2022 to five individuals — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, United States (US) Representative Liz Cheney, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Arizona Representative Russell “Rusty” Bowers, and Wandrea “Shaye” Moss — each for their courage to protect and defend democracy.
- The award will be presented by Caroline Kennedy and her son, Jack Schlossberg on May 22, 2022 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Boston, USA.
Young Global Leader Award
- Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Senior Leader and Rajya Sabha Member Raghav Chadha was honoured as a Young Global Leader for 2022 by the World Economic Forum.
- The Young Global Leaders felicitation is an acknowledgement of his immense talent. In the words of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he is an honest, dedicated, patriotic and stylish leader. After the announcement of the award, Kejriwal congratulated him on Twitter.
Chairperson of the Haj Committee of India
- AP Abdullahkutty has been elected as the chairperson of the Haj Committee of India, while for the first time, two women have been chosen as its vice chairpersons- Munnawari Begum and Mafuja Khatun.
- The Government of India has appointed C Muhammed Faizi as a member of the Haj Committee of India (HCoI), a statutory body under the Ministry of Minority Affairs, under sub-section (11), of Section 4 of Haj Committee Act 2022, for a period of 3 years up to 31st March 2025 with effect from 21st April
‘Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization’ conference
- The 3-day “Smart Cities, Smart Urbanization” conference has been organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in association with Surat Smart City Corporation Development Ltd.
- Municipal Commissioners of Cities, MDs/CEOs of 100 Smart Cities, State Level Nodal Agencies/ Mission Directorates, professionals, and industry representatives have participated in this conference.
- During the conference, winners of the India Smart Cities Awards Contest (ISAC) 2020 were also felicitated.
- Surat and Indore got the Best city award, while Uttar Pradesh was awarded the Best State award.
