- The Indian Air Force was established on 8 October 1932 during British rule.
- Its first operational squadron was No. 1 Squadron, formed in 1933.
- The IAF initially served as the Royal Indian Air Force.
- The prefix “Royal” was dropped after India became a republic in 1950.
- The IAF has participated in major conflicts including the 1947–48 Indo-Pakistan War, 1965 Indo-Pakistan War, 1971 Indo-Pakistan War and Kargil War (1999).

- 1932 = Established under the Indian Air Force Act; its first operational squadron (No. 1 Squadron) was formed on 1 April 1933 at Drigh Road (Karachi) with four Westland Wapiti biplanes.
- Royal Prefix = Bestowed with the title Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF) in 1945 by King George VI for its contributions in World War II.
- Republic Transition = The prefix “Royal” was dropped on 26 January 1950 when India became a republic.
