International Coffee Day – History

  • In March 2014, the member states of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) agreed to establish International Coffee Day.
  • 1 October was selected as a common global day for celebrating coffee.
  • The first official International Coffee Day was held on 1 October 2015.
  • It was officially launched during Expo Milan 2015, alongside the Global Coffee Forum and the 115th Session of the International Coffee Council.

Coffee and India

  • Introduced in the 17th century by Sufi saint Baba Budan, who smuggled seven raw coffee beans from Yemen and planted them on the Chandragiri Hills of Chikkamagaluru (now Baba Budan Giri, Karnataka).
  • India is an important coffee-producing country, with production concentrated mainly in South India.
  • The major traditional coffee-producing states are:
      1. Karnataka
      2. Kerala
      3. Tamil Nadu
  • Karnataka is India’s leading coffee-producing state.
  • Important coffee-growing regions include Kodagu (Coorg), Chikkamagaluru and Hassan in Karnataka; Wayanad in Kerala; and the Nilgiris, Pulneys and Shevaroys in Tamil Nadu.
