National Engineers’ Day marks the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who is also popularly known as Sir MV.

About Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (M. Visvesvaraya)

Born = 15 September 1861, Muddenahalli, Karnataka.
Died = 14 April 1962.
He was a renowned engineer, statesman, and administrator.
He played an important role in the development of irrigation, water supply, flood protection, and infrastructure in India.
He served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918.
He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955, India’s highest civilian award.
He is popularly remembered for his contributions to engineering and nation-building.
Engineers’ Day celebrates the contribution of engineers to technological development, innovation, infrastructure, and economic growth.
Sir M. Visvesvaraya served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore (1912–1918) and is celebrated as the “Father of Modern Mysore“
The Government of India declared his birthday as National Engineers’ Day in 1968 to recognize the central role of engineers in nation-building and socioeconomic growth.
Sir Visvesvaraya is known as the father of Indian economic planning
He wrote Planned Economy for India in 1934. This book gave a ten-year plan to build up industry and grow the economy.
He said “Industrialize or Perish,” meaning India had to build factories and modern jobs to survive.

Patented Automatic Sluice Gates (1903): Designed and patented automated weir floodgates that raised storage capacity without damaging the dam, first installed at Pune’s Khadakwasla Reservoir and later at Tigra Dam in Gwalior.
Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam: As Chief Engineer of Mysore, he spearheaded the construction of the landmark KRS Dam across the Kaveri River, turning the Mandya region into a fertile agricultural hub and supplying power to the Kolar Gold Fields.
Flood Protection System for Hyderabad: Following the devastating Musi River flood of 1908, he designed an extensive drainage and flood-prevention blueprint, resulting in the creation of the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs.
Coastal Engineering: Engineered an erosion-control system to protect the Visakhapatnam Port from severe marine siltation and wave erosion.
Institution Builder: Instrumental in establishing Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) in Bengaluru, Mysore Iron & Steel Works (now VISL), the State Bank of Mysore, and Mysore University.
