RBI launches new UPI service for feature phones: UPI123Pay

  • RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on 8 March 2022 launched UPI for feature phones called UPI123
  • He also launched 24×7 helpline for digital payments – DigiSaathi.
  • UPI on feature phones will help people in rural areas who cannot afford a smartphone.
  • UPI123Pay is a three-step method to initiate and execute services for users who will work on simple phones.

‘Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav’ campaign launched

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development, in partnership with Ministry of Education and UNICEF, launched a campaign ‘Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav’, on 7 Mar’
  • It has been launched to bring back out-ofschool adolescent girls in India to the formal education and/or skilling system.
  • Over 400 districts will be funded under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme for awareness generation.

Digital Payments Awareness Week

  • The Reserve Bank of India will observe Digital Payments Awareness Week (DPAW) from March 7- 11,
  • The theme of Digital Payments Awareness Week (DPAW) 2022 is: “Outreach and Availability of Digital Payments”.
  • The week is being observed to celebrate the 17th Foundation Day of Department of Payment and Settlement Systems (DPSS) on March
  • DPSS is responsible for managing Payments Systems in India

TAMILNADU

Tamil Nadu youth joins Ukrainian forces

  • A 21 year old aerospace engineering student from Tamil Nadu who was twice rejected by Indian Army because of his height is now fighting for Ukraine against Russia as part of the Georgian National Legion Parliamentary Unit
  • Intelligence officils visited the house of Sai nikhesh Ravichandran at Subramaniyampalayam, near Thudiyalur in Coimbatore.

Avvaiyar Award 2022

  • “Avvaiyar Award” is given by the Government of Tamil Nadu in recognition of women who have excelled in service to women through the Department of Social Welfare and Women’s Rights.
  • This year’s Avvaiyar Award has been given to Kirija Kumar Babu. He received the award in recognition of his service to women and children

Russia becomes the world’s most sanctioned country

  • Due to its war on Ukraine, Russia has become the most sanctioned in the world, according to a New York-based sanctions watchlist site Castellum
  • Sanctions were first imposed by the US and its allies on Russia on Feb 22,
  • 2,754 sanctions were already in place against Russia before Feb
  • Russia’s number now outranks Iran’s 3,616 sanctions, displacing Tehran from the top position.

ISSF World Cup 2022

  • Indian shooters ended their campaign at the ISSF World Cup 2022 in Cairo, Egypt with a total of seven medals, which included, four gold, two silver and one bronze medal.
  • With this, India topped the medals tally.
  • Norway was second with six medals including three gold, one silver and two bronze.

Indians won 3 gold in Asian Sailing Championship

  • India won 9 medals – 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze – at the Asian Sailing Championships which concluded in Abu Dhabi.
  • Tamil Nadu’s Varun, C Ganapathy won gold in this event.

India win third gold of Cairo Shooting World Cup

  • India topped the medal tally with 7 medals of 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze at the tournament in Cairo.

Para Badminton: 34 medals for India

  • India won 34 medals including 11 gold, 7 silver and 16 bronze at the International Para Badminton Championships in Spain.
  • Pramod Bhagat, the Tokyo Olympic champion, won 3 gold medals for India at the tournament in Vitoria, Spain.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launches 2nd satellite Noor-2

  • Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard launched a second satellite into space in March 2022.
  • The Noor-2 satellite reached a low orbit on the Ghased satellite carrier.
  • Ghased is a three-phase, mixed fuel satellite carrier.
  • Noor means “light” in Farsi.
  • The Guard launched its first Noor satellite in 2020, revealing to the world it ran its own space programme.

Petascale Supercomputer “PARAM Ganga” deployed at IIT Roorkee

  • National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) has deployed “PARAM Ganga”, a supercomputer at IIT Roorkee.
  • It has a supercomputing capacity of 66 Petaflops.
  • The system was designed and commissioned by C-DAC under Phase 2 of the build approach of the NSM.
  • It will accelerate the research and development activities in multidisciplinary domains of science and engineering.

Europa Clipper spacecraft

  • American space agency NASA has started building the Europa Clipper spacecraft that will launch in
  • The mission’s purpose is to find if Jupiter’s moon Europa has conditions to support life.
  • The Europa Clipper mission will conduct detailed reconnaissance of icy moon of Jupiter.
  • NASA said that scientists are “almost certain” a vast ocean lies beneath Europa’s icy shell.

Freedom of the World 2022 report

  • For the second consecutive year, India has been termed as ‘partly free’ country in terms of democracy and free society, according to the annual report titled “Freedom in the World 2022 – The Global Expansion of Authoritarian Rule” by Freedom House, a US-based NGO that ‘assesses political rights and civil liberties’.
  • The report is published every year since 1973 to assess political rights and civil liberties of a country through a series of surveys and analyses.
  • India scored 66 out of 100 in The country had scored 67 in 2021. India was a free country till 2020 when its score was 71.
  • In 2022, 85 countries were termed as free, 56 as partly free and 69 as not free

Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Textiles to organise ‘Jharokha’

  • Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Textiles are organizing “Jharokha-Compendium of Indian handicraft/ handloom, art, and culture”.
  • It will be a PAN India celebration which will be held at 16 locations in 13 states and UTs.
  • The first event under this is being organized in Bhopal, MP starting from 8 Mar’
  • A dedicated corner for Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat (EBSB) has also been set up.

Presidential Award for Assistant Commissioner of Customs

  • Chennai Customs Assistant Commissioner Anand Kumar Savalam has been awarded the President’s Award for the year 2022
