World Puppetry Day: 21 March

  • World Puppetry Day is observed every year on March 21st, with the goal of promoting puppetry and honoring puppeteers all across the world.
  • The day was first observed in 2003, when the Union Internationale de la Marionnette (UNIMA) established it.
  • Puppetry is an old theatre technique that dates back to 3000
  • The theme for 2022 is ‘The Sea’.

Sangeet Natak Akademi to organise Putul Utsav

  • Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, is organizing Putul Utsav, a puppet festival, on 21 Mar’
  • The theme of the festival is ‘Azadi ke Rang, Putul Ke Sang’.
  • In this event, tales of India’s struggle for freedom will be retold through the medium of puppets.
  • It will be celebrated in 5 cities – Varanasi, Hyderabad, Angul, New Delhi and Agartala.

International Day For The Elimination of Racial Discrimination: 21 March

  • The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on 26 October 1966 and proclaimed 21 March as this day to be commemorated annually.
  • On that day, in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid “pass laws”.
  • The theme for 2022 is ‘Voices or Action Against Racism’.

  • ‘Shri Dharmajivan Gatha’, the biography of Shastriji Maharaj was released on 20 Mar’
  • It was released on the occasion of Bhav Vandna Parv in Ahmedabad, which was addressed by PM Modi.
  • The volumes of a book on the life of Gurudev Shastriji Maharaj have been written by his disciple Swami Shri Madhavpriya Dasji.
  • Shastriji had reestablished the ancient Gurukul education system in society.

  • The day was first started by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) at its 30th General Conference in Paris in the year
  • The aim is to support linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increase the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.

International Day of Forests: 21 March

  • The day was established by the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 28,
  • The day aims to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and trees.
  • According to the UN, around 6 billion people depend directly on forests for food, shelter, energy, medicines, and income.
  • The theme for 2022 is ‘Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption’.

World Down Syndrome Day: 21 March

  • Down syndrome, a genetic condition, was first described by British physician John Langdon Haydon Down in
  • But it was only in 1959, the French physician Jérôme Lejeune identified Down syndrome as a chromosomal condition.
  • In Down syndrome, a person is born with an extra chromosome which can cause physical and mental challenges in the infant.

IIT Madras, Northwestern University develop AI powered algorithms

  • Researchers at IIT Madras and the US based Northwestern University have developed deep learning algorithms.
  • They can greatly enhance the depth perception and 3D effects in videos shot using smartphone cameras.
  • The research has been published in the ‘Proceedings of International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV), 2021’.

India, Japan launch Clean Energy Partnership

  • India and Japan on 19 March 2022 launched a Clean Energy Partnership (CEP).
  • It has been launched for cooperation towards achieving sustainable economic growth, addressing climate change, and ensuring energy security.
  • The initiative was launched on the occasion of the 14th India-Japan Annual Summit being held in New Delhi.

Nagaland becomes first to implement NeVA programme

Pankaj Advani wins Asian Billiards Championship for the eighth time

  • Pankaj Advani lifted his eighth title at the 19th Asian Billiards Championship 2022 in Doha, Qatar after beating compatriot Dhruv Sitwala 6-2, on 19 March 2022.

  • Earlier, Advani defeated Pauk Sa of Myanmar to secure a spot in the final.

New interdisciplinary water management and policy centre called ‘AquaMAP’

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has established a new interdisciplinary water management and policy centre called ‘AquaMAP’ to solve water problems in India.
  • The AquaMAP was inaugurated at IIT Madras by Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, on March 19,

First station in East Coast to implement ‘One Nation, One Product’

  • Visakhapatnam Railway Station, Andhra Pradesh is set to implement the ‘One Nation, One Product’ concept of the Government of India on a pilot basis for 15
  • This will become the first railway station in the East Coast railway to implement ‘One Nation, One Product’. The Railway Board of the Indian Railways has identified one station in every zone for implementing the pilot project for a period of 15
  • ‘One station One product’ concept, based on the successful ‘One District, One Product’ scheme, was announced by the government of India while presenting the budget for 2022 23.
