Gilbert F. Houngbo (First African): ILO’s New Director-General

• The Governing Body of the International Labour Organization elected its new Director-General.
• Gilbert F. Houngbo from Togo was elected as the 11th Director-General and will take office in Oct’22.
• Houngbo is currently President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
• The current Director-General, Guy Ryder, from the United Kingdom, has held office since 2012.

Maharashtra win national para swimming championship 2022

• Maharashtra has won The 21st National Para-Swimming Championship held at Khel Gaon, Udaipur.
• The tournament was jointly held by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and Narayan Seva Sansthan.
• The championship was based on standard international swimming rules that shall include the use of Automatic Officiating Equipment (AVOI) for standard measurement of accurate time and distance.”

Vice President addresses 8th Annual Summit of the NATHEALTH

• The Healthcare Federation of India held its 8th Annual Summit NATHEALTH on the theme, “Re-building, Re-structuring and Re – imagining resilient healthcare systems in India” on 28-29 Mar’22.
• The summit aimed to unite industry and the government together in one platform to discuss and pave the path for a stronger health system in India.
• The summit also hosted the business opportunity pavilion.

Uttar Pradesh adjudged best state at National Water Awards 2022

• Uttar Pradesh topped among all Indian states in terms of water conservation.
• On 29 March 2022, President Ram Nath Kovind awarded the ‘best state’ award at the National Water Awards 2022.
• Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu secured the 2nd & 3rd place.
• Muzaffarnagar topped in the Best District Category for the north zone, Thiruvanathapuram for south while east Champaran, Indore for the east&West Zone.

Medanta Gurugram won “The Best Private Hospital in India Award”

• Medanta Gurugram was awarded as The Best Private Hospital in India third time in a row in Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals 2022 survey.
• With Statista Inc. Medanta is the only private hospital in India to feature in the top 150 of the World’s Best Hospitals 2022 survey list.
• The survey is based on recommendations from medical professionals, conducted across over 2200 hospitals in 27 countries.

BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year’21: S. Verma, K. Malleswari awarded

• In this 3rd edition of BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2021, “BBC Emerging Player award” was presented to cricketer Shafali Verma.
• In 2021, Verma became the youngest Indian cricketer, male or female, to play in all three formats for the national team.
• Karnam Malleswari, the 1st Indian woman to win an Olympic medalat the 2000 Games in Sydney, awarded the BBC Lifetime Achievement award’21.

Mirabai Chanu wins ‘BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award 2021’

• Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year award for 2021 on 29 Mar’22.
• Chanu became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at an Olympic Games, when she finished second in the 49kg category in Tokyo.
• Chanu won the gold medal in the 48kg division at the 2017 World Championships in Anaheim, and followed up with Commonwealth Games gold in 2018

DR Congo becomes 7th member of the East Africa Community (EAC)

• The Democratic Republic of Congo has joined the East African Community (EAC) as its seventh member on 29 March 2022.
• Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda are the other members.
• The DRC is the largest and most populous country to join the EAC.
• The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental organisation founded in 1967

• India’s leading UPS manufacturer and supplier, Numeric UPS won the ‘Most Trusted Brands of India’ 2022 award on March 29, 2022, at an event in Mumbai.
• The award was announced by Team Marksmen.
• Most Trusted Brands of India-2022 is an exclusive gathering of brands to celebrate their achievements over the past year and beyond

Vaishno Devi Shrine bags 1st prize at 3rd National Water Awards-2022

• Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) bagged the First Prize of the ‘National Water Awards-2022’ on 29 Mar’22.
• The Award has been given by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, in recognition of the significant strides made by the Shrine Board to promote water conservation.
• Ramesh Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has received the award.

World Bipolar Day

• World Bipolar Day is observed on March 30 to spread awareness about the mental health disorder that affects people all over the world.
• The day is marked on the birth anniversary of world renowned Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh who lived with bipolar disorder his whole life.
• Bipolar disorder is a condition under which the person experiences extreme mood and energy changes which further hampers the capability of functioning normally.
• World Bipolar Day is an initiative by the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) partnered with the Asian Network of Bipolar Disorders (ANBD) and the International Bipolar Foundation.

1st edition of Maiden IONS Maritime Exercise 2022 (IMEX-22)

• The first edition of Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Maritime Exercise 2022 (IMEX-22) was held from March 26 to 30, 2022, in Goa and in Arabian Sea.
• The objective of the exercise was to enhance interoperability of the navies of member nations in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
• The navies from 15 out of the 25 member nations of IONS, participated in the exercise.
• The Harbour Phase of IMEX – 22 was held at Marmugao port, Goa on March 26 and 27 while the Sea Phase took place in the Arabian Sea from March 28 to 30, 2022.

IFS officer Renu Singh appointed Forest Research Institute (FRI) director

• Dr Renu Singh has been appointed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) as the next director of the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun.
• She will be the institute’s second woman director. Singh joined as FRI director after AS Rawat, director-general, ICFRE, handed over his additional charge of director FRI to her.

Max Verstappen wins 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

• Max Verstappen (Red Bull – Netherlands) has won the Formula One 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at Jeddah Corniche Circuit, Saudi Arabia. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari- Monaco) came second and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari – Spain) came third.
• It was the second edition of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and the second round of the 2022 Formula One World Championship. Lewis Hamilton managed to get a point on the board after coming 10th.

IAF CELEBRATES DIAMOND JUBILEE OF CHETAK HELICOPTER

• The Chetak helicopter in the inventory of the Indian Armed Forces has completed 60 years of glorious service to the Nation.
• The Conclave intends to provide a platform to showcase six decades of helicopter operations in the country, highlighting Chetak helicopter operations in particular.

Decrease in annual rainfall for Chennai at the rate of 6.398 mm/year during the next three decades

• Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh says, recent scientific studies have projected a decrease in annual rainfall for Chennai at the rate of 6.398 mm/year during the next three decades (2020-2050)
• The Minister also informed that it is expected that the sea level will continue to rise in the coming several decades

Konkan Railway accomplishes ‘Mission 100% Electrification’

• On a mission mode to electrify its entire Broad Gauge network to provide environment friendly, green & clean mode of transport to its people under the ‘Mission 100% Electrification – Moving towards net Zero Carbon Emission’ plan, Konkan Railway has accomplished 100% Rail electrification of its entire stretch.
• Konkan Railway being one of the biggest railway routes on the Indian Railway network, the train operations with electric traction will be implemented on the newly electrified KR route in a phased manner.
