Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Richard Howard passes away

  • Richard Howard, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, passed away in April
  • Howard was a professor emeritus at Columbia University.
  • He won the poetry Pulitzer in 1970 for “Untitled Subjects” and was a National Book Award finalist in 2008 for “Without Saying.”
  • His translation of Charles Baudelaire’s “Les Fleurs du Mal” won the National Book Award (then called the American Book Award) in 1983

Shrimad Bhagavad Gita to be taught in Himachal Pradesh from Class 9

  • Shrimad Bhagavad Gita will be taught to all school students from Class 9 in Himachal Pradesh.
  • This was informed by state Education Minister Govind Singh Thakur.
  • With this, it will become 2nd state after Gujarat to make Gita a part of the school syllabus.
  • In March 2022, Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani had announced that Bhagavad Gita will be a part of the syllabus for classes 6-12.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited hands over Gaganyaan hardware to ISRO

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) handed over the first set of Gaganyaan hardware to ISRO on 4 April
  • It was handed over during the inauguration of HAL’s PS2/GS2 stage integration facility in Bengaluru.
  • The PS2 stage is the second stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) launch vehicle in which earth storable propellants are used for propulsion.

Mithun Manjunath wins silver medal in men’s singles

  • In badminton, Mithun Manjunath won a silver medal after losing to Toma Junior Popov of France in the men’s singles final of the Orleans Masters 2022 badminton tournament in Orleans, France.
  • The 79th ranked Mithun was defeated by 21- 11, 21-19.
  • The only other Indian players to reach the semi-finals of the Orleans Masters 2022 were Ashwini Bhat K. and Shikha Gautam in the women’s doubles

Union Govt appoints Vinay Mohan Kwatra as new Foreign Secretary

  • India’s envoy to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary, succeeding Harsh Vardhan Shringla who will retire at the end of April
  • Kwatra is a 1988-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and will take charge on 30 April’
  • Before his diplomatic posting to Nepal in 2020, he served as the Ambassador of India to France from August 2017 to February

President Kovind arrives in Netherlands for 3-day visit

  • President Ram Nath Kovind on 4 April 2022, arrived in Amsterdam, Netherlands on the final leg of his two-nation visit.
  • It is the first presidential visit to the Netherlands after 34
  • He arrived here from Turkmenistan where he held talks with his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
  • He is the first Indian President to visit independent Turkmenistan.

59th National Maritime Day: 5 April 2022

  • India celebrates National Maritime Day on April 5 every year
  • The day was first celebrated in the year
  • On this day in 1919, SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd., journeyed to the UK, a crucial step in India’s shipping history when sea routes were controlled by the British.
  • The day is observed yearly by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

Jupiter’s identical twin discovered about 17,000 light-yrs away

  • Jupiter’s near-identical twin has been discovered.
  • The exoplanet, referred to as K2-2016-BLG0005Lb, orbits its star at a similar distance from its star as Jupiter is from the Sun.
  • The study has been published as a preprint on ArXiv.org and submitted to the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
  • The exoplanet is about 17,000 light-years from the Earth.

PM pays tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram on his birth anniversary

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram Ji on his birth anniversary.
  • In a tweet, the Prime Minister said; “Tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram Ji on his birth anniversary. Our nation will always remember his remarkable contribution be it during the freedom movement or after Independence. He was widely admired for his administrative skills and concern for the poor.”

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan releases a book “Birsa Munda – Janjatiya Nayak”

  • Union Education and Skill Development Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan today released a book “Birsa Munda – Janjatiya Nayak” written by Prof. Alok Chakrawal, Vice Chancellor, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur.
  • Speaking on the occasion Shri Pradhan said that this book is a comprehensive attempt to bring to the fore the struggle of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and the contribution of forest dwellers in the freedom movement

Union Environment Minister Launches Awareness Mascot ‘Prakriti’

  • Various green initiatives taken by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to ensure effective Plastic Waste Management (PWM) in the country

83rd National Table Tennis Championship 2022

  • Meghalaya is all set to host the 83rd National Table Tennis Championship 2022, which will take place at the SAI Indoor Training Centre, NEHU in Shillong from April 18 to 25.
  • This is the second time the Northeast has hosted the world’s largest table tennis tournament.
  • This tournament is being hosted in honour of the State’s 50th anniversary of statehood

First Special Rapporteur for human rights and climate change by UN

  • The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has appointed Dr Ian Fry as the world’s first independent expert for human rights and climate change.
  • Dr Fry has been appointed for a period of three years. He holds dual citizenship of Tuvalu and Australia.
  • The position of Special Rapporteur for human rights and climate change was created by UNHRC in October

Story of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi – “Queen of Fire”

  • Award winning children’s writer and historian Devika Rangachari has authored a new novel titled “Queen of Fire”, which explores the story of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi.
  • The book focus on the journey of Rani Lakshmibai as a queen, soldier, and statesman. The book provides a detailed account on how the queen took over the kingdom as a widow and joined the revolutionaries to rebel against East India Company.
