IIIT Hyderabad hosts first national symposium under QuEST

  • IIIT Hyderabad hosted the first national symposium under the Quantum Enabled Science and Technology (QuEST) program from 11-13 Apr’22.
  • It was hosted by IIITH’s Centre for Quantum Science and Technology (CQST) with a focus on the latest research and developments in the areas of Quantum Computing, Quantum Information Science and Quantum Technology.

38th Siachen Day: 13 April 2022

  • Indian Army marks Siachen Day on April 13 every year.
  • The day is observed to commemorate the courage of the Indian Army under “Operation Meghdoot”.
  • The operation was launched in 1984, under which, the Indian Army gained control over the heights on the main passes of the Saltoro ridge, Sia La and Bilafond La.
  • The Siachen Glacier is the highest battleground on earth.

Mumbai recognized as ‘Tree City of the World’ by United Nations

  • Mumbai has been recognized as the “2021 Tree City of the World” by the food and agriculture organization of United Nations jointly with Arbor Day Foundation.
  • It is the second city in India to receive this distinction, after Hyderabad, which bagged the title two years in a row.
  • Mumbai has planted a total of 4,25,000 trees and has been accredited with 25,000 volunteer hours.

List of the top 10 busiest airports in the world revealed by ACI

  • Airports Council International (ACI) World has published the list of the top 10 busiest airports worldwide for
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) taking the No. 1 spot, followed by Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Denver International Airport.
  • The rest two are from China.
  • ACI HQ: Montreal, Canada.

Trishakti Corps conducts EX Kripan Shakti at Teesta field firing range

  • The Trishakti Corps conducted Ex Kripan Shakti, an Integrated Fire Power exercise at Teesta Field Firing Ranges (TFFR) near Siliguri (WB) on 12 April
  • It was aimed at orchestrating and synergizing the capabilities of the Indian Army and the Central Armed Police Forces to fight an integrated battle.
  • The firing involved employment and firing of all arms and weapon systems.

India and Singapore organise East Asia Summit Workshop

  • Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and the Government of Singapore organized a virtual East Asia Summit (EAS) Workshop on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing on 12 April
  • The workshop was attended by 8 EAS member countries and 4 knowledge partners.
  • Countries including Australia, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Republic of Korea participated.

Indian Air Force signs MoU with IIT Madras

  • Indian Air Force and IIT Madras signed an MoU on 13 April 2022 for various developmental projects to support the requirements of the IAF.
  • The partnership aims to accelerate IAF’s indigenization efforts for achieving ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’.

  • 103rd anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre was observed on 13 April
  • Hundreds of people protesting peacefully against the Rowlatt Acts, which granted the colonial administration repressive powers, were gunned down by British forces without any provocation, in
  • It was one of the most brutal instances India witnessed under British rule.

Ravichandran becomes first player to get retired out in IPL history

  • Rajasthan Royals’ Ravichandran Ashwin became the first player in IPL history to get retired out during the clash against Lucknow Super Giants, in April
  • He scored 28 runs from 23
  • Hailed as the new innovation in T20 cricket, retired-out dismissals are made by teams to maximise each ball.
  • If a batter retires during his innings for any reason, he/she is considered retired out.

Nykaa CEO Falguni Nayar wins EY Entrepreneur of the Year award

  • Falguni Nayar, the CEO of Nykaa, has been named the EY Entrepreneur of the Year for
  • A M Naik, group chairman of Larsen & Toubro, was felicitated with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • Falguni will now represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award on June 9,
  • Earlier, in 2019, she was the recipient of EY Entrepreneur of The Year Award in the startup category.

Army Chief inducted the first set of indigenously developed QRFV

  • General MM Naravane, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) inducted the first set of indigenously developed Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle Medium (QRFV), Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), and Ultra Long Range Observation System.
  • They have been developed by Tata Advanced System Limited (TASL).
  • They were inducted at a function organised at the Bombay Engineer Group (BEG) on 12 Apr’22 in Pune.

“Amrit Samagam”, a conference of Tourism ministers, inaugurated

  • The Union Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, inaugurated the “Amrit Samagam”, a conference of tourism and culture ministers of the country, on 12 April
  • Ministry of Culture is organizing it from 12-13 April in New Delhi.
  • Union Minister for Tourism, Culture, and DONER G. Kishan Reddy also launched the Utsav Portal during the event.

First made in India Dornier aircraft flight flagged off

  • The Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya M. Scindia flagged off the first flight of Made in India HAL Dornier Do-228 on 12 April
  • The flight will be operational from Dibrugarh in Assam to Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh and finally to Lilabari in Assam.
  • Alliance Air had signed an MoU with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to operate Indian-made Dornier aircraft.

Pinaka Mk-I (Enhanced) Rocket System(EPRS)

  • Defence Research and Development Organization(DRDO) and the Indian Army have successfully flight-tested Pinaka Mk-I (Enhanced) Rocket System (EPRS).
  • Developed by Pune-based DRDO laboratories – Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL).
  • EPRS is the upgraded version of the Pinaka variant that has been in service with the Indian Army for the last decades.

First Indian city to become a member of the Global Silk City Network

  • Recently, Bengaluru has become the first Indian city to become a member of the Global Silk City Network.
  • Global Silk City Network helps artisans and craftsmen to exchange knowledge, build trade relations and understand various craftsmanship techniques.
  • Currently, 13 best silk-producing cities and nine countries are members of this network.

NITI Aayog’s State Energy and Climate Index

  • Gujarat has topped NITI Aayog’s State Energy and Climate Index (SECI) with a score of 50.1 points in the larger states category.
  • Kerala and Punjab are ranked second and third with a score of 49.1 and 48.6 respectively.
  • While Goa has topped the category of small states, followed by Tripura and Manipur.
  • Among UTs, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Daman & Diu/Dadra & Nagar Haveli are the top performers.
  • According to NITI Aayog, the State Energy and Climate Index is the first index that aims to track the efforts made by states and UTs in the climate and energy sector

Asia’s Largest Sewerage Treatment Plant At Okhla

  • The Okhla Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP), with a capacity of 564 Million Litres Per Day (MLD), largest STP in Asia, which is set to function in Delhi from December 2022 will play a major role in Yamuna river cleaning process. Following the completion of this project the water quality of river Yamuna will be improved.
  • This STP aims to remove contaminants from sewage to produce an effluent that is suitable for discharge to the surrounding environment or an intended reuse application

Number of Indian Patents Filed Exceeds the Number of International Patent Filings for the First Time in Over a Decade: Govt. of India

  • For the first time in the last 11 years, the number of domestic patent filings has surpassed the number of international patent filings at the Indian Patent Office in the January–March 2022 quarter, marking a watershed moment in the IP innovation ecosystem for India.
  • Of the total 19,796 patent applications filed, 10,706 were filed by Indian applicants compared to 9,090 by non-Indian applicants.

About 99% World’s Population Is Now Breathing Polluted Air: WHO

  • According to the latest update from the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN) health agency, about 99% of the world’s population breathes air that does not meet WHO’s air quality standards.
