NCRTC receives India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System Train Set

  • The very first trainset of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor was handed over to National Capital Region Transport Corporation on 7 May 2022.
  • 100 percent of these state-of-the-art RRTS trainsets are being manufactured in the country at the Alstom’s factory in Savli, Gujarat.
  • The full corridor of the RRTS corridor will be commissioned by 2025.

Asian Games 2022 in China postponed to 2023

  • The Asian Games 2022, due to be held in Hangzhou, China, have been postponed to 2023 due to rising COVID-19 cases in the country.
  • New dates for the 19th edition of the Games will now be announced.
  • The Asian Games 2022 were originally scheduled from September 10 to 25, 2022.
  • The World University Games 2021, to be held from June 26 to July 27 in Chengdu, have also been pushed to 2023.

World Athletics Day: 7 May

  • May 7 is celebrated annually as World Athletics Day.
  • The day aims to spread awareness among the youth about athletics.
  • It was also introduced as a social responsibility project titled ‘Athletic for a better world’ by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
  • The day was founded by IAAF President Primo Nebiolo in 1996.

MHA and SECI sign MoU to realize India’s green energy initiative

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs has initiated a proposal to install Solar Energy Panels in the campuses of Central Armed Police Forces and National Security Guard.
  • Accordingly, an MoU was signed on May 6, 2022 between Ministry of Home Affairs and Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd.
  • The MoU envisages collaboration for jointly undertaking installation of solar rooftop PV power plants.

Khelo India mascot and logo launched at Panchkula in Haryana

  • In Haryana, the mascot, logo, jersey, and theme song of Khelo India Youth Games were launched in a special ceremony held at Indradhanush Stadium in Panchkula on 7 May 2022.
  • More than 8,000 athletes will be participating in the event.
  • The opening ceremony of the games will be on June 4, 2022.
  • The games will be held at Panchkula, Ambala, Shahbad, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

Priyanka Mohite becomes 1st woman to scale five peaks above 8,000 metres

  • Priyanka Mohite from Maharashtra has become the first Indian woman to scale five peaks above 8,000 meters after she climbed Mount Kanchenjunga in May 2022.
  • She is also a recipient of Tenzing Norgay Adventure Award 2020.
  • In April 2021, she had scaled Mt Annapurna (8,091 m), the 10th highest mountain peak in the world, and had become the first Indian woman climber to achieve the feat.

India’s fertility rate decreases to 2 from 2.2

  • India’s total fertility rate (TFR) has declined from 2.2 children in 2015-16 to 2 children per woman now, the latest edition of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) showed.
  • The TFR is currently below the replacement level of fertility of 2.1 children per woman.
  • According to the report, the median age at first birth among women aged 25-49 is 21.2 years.

L&T Info, Mindtree merger announced

  • L&T Infotech (LTI) and Mindtree board of directors have approved a composite scheme of amalgamation of both these independently listed IT services companies under the Larsen & Toubro Group.
  • With that, Mindtree will be merging with LTI.
  • Mindtree chief Debashis Chatterjee will head the combined entity of “LTIMindtree”, as L&T Infotech CEO and MD Sanjay Jalona resigned for personal reasons.

India’s 1st Flow Chemistry Technology Hub

  • Government of Telangana in collaboration with the pharmaceuticals majors Dr. Reddy’s Laboratory and Laurus Labs along with academia has set up India’s first-of-its-kind Flow Chemistry Technology Hub (FCT Hub) at Dr. Reddy’s Institute of Life Sciences (DRILS) Hyderabad, Telangana.
  • The hub will facilitate the pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) and adoption of continuous synthesis for making Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).

India’s 1st tribal health observatory

  • Government of Odisha has set up India’s first Tribal Health Observatory (TriHOb), which acts as a repository on the health of the tribal population in the state.
  • This will be India’s only tribal health observatory.
  • An MoU was signed between the ST and SC Development Department and the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar, Odisha, a regional centre of the Indian Council of Medical Research.

1st state to reach 10 GW Solar Power

  • According to Mercom’s India Solar Project Tracker, Rajasthan became the first state in India to reach 10 GW of cumulative large-scale solar installations.
  • The state has a total installed power capacity of 5 GW, with renewables accounting for 55 percent, thermal energy for 43 percent, and nuclear energy accounting for the remaining 2%.
  • Solar is the most common energy source, accounting for roughly 36 percent of total capacity and 64 percent of renewables.

Highest sex ratio at birth in 2020

  • The Union Territory of Ladakh (1104) recorded the highest sex ratio at birth in the country in 2020, followed by Arunachal Pradesh (1011), A&N Islands (984), Tripura (974), and Kerala (969), according to the annual report on Vital Statistics based on 2020 Civil Registration System report.
  • Lowest sex ratio at birth was reported by Manipur (880), followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (898), Gujarat (909), Haryana (916) and Madhya Pradesh (921).
  • The report is published by the Registrar General of India (Ministry of Home Affairs).

World Food Prize 2022

  • A senior research scientist and head of the Climate Impacts Group at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, Cynthia Rosenzweig has received the 2022 World Food Prize from the World Food Prize Foundation.
  • Rosenzweig was selected for the award for her research to understand the relationship between climate and food systems and forecast how both will change in the future.
