International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace: 24 April

  • The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is observed on 24 April every year.
  • It was established on 12 December 2018 through a UN resolution and was first observed on 24 April 2019.
  • The day acknowledges the use of multilateral decision-making and diplomacy in achieving peaceful resolutions to conflicts among nations.

India, EU to launch Trade and Technology Council

  • President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks in New Delhi on 25 April 2022.
  • They agreed to launch the EU-India Trade and Technology Council.
  • This strategic coordination mechanism will allow both partners to tackle challenges at the nexus of trade, trusted technology, and security, and thus deepen cooperation in these fields

Gautam Adani surpasses Warren Buffett to become fifth richest

  • Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has overtaken Warren Buffett as the fifth richest in the world.
  • According to Forbes, his net worth reached $123.7 billion compared to Buffet’s $121.7 billion.
  • He is behind Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates ($130.2 billion), Bernard Arnault ($167.9 billion), Jeff Bezos ($170.2 billion), and Elon Musk ($269.7 billion).

Deepak Punia wins silver medal in Asian Wrestling Championships

  • Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia settled for a silver medal in the men’s freestyle 86 kg at the 2022 Asian Wrestling Championships, on 24 April 2022.
  • Viky bagged a bronze in the 92 kg category.
  • India finished with a total tally of 17 medals — one gold, five silver and 11 bronze at Ulaanbaatar.
  • Tokyo medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya won the solitary gold in the men’s 57kg weight class.

Govind Sunil Mahajan wins gold at Khelo India University Games

  • In Khelo India University Games, weightlifter Govind Sunil Mahajan won gold and Uday Anil Mahajan won silver.
  • Both represented Kaviyatri Bahinabai Chaudhuri North Maharashtra University.
  • Maharshi Dayanand University’s Komal Kohar won gold in the women’s weightlifting 45kg class.
  • Over at the shooting range, Delhi University’s Paarth Makhija topped the list with 628.6 points.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitates 1971 war veterans in Assam

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh felicitated over 300 war-veterans of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh in Assam on 23 April 2022.
  • On the occasion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also released a book ‘The Bravehearts of 1971’.
  • The war was an armed conflict between West Pakistan (now Pakistan) and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
  • It resulted in Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan.

First edition of Naval Commanders’ Conference begins

  • The first edition of the Naval Commanders’ Conference of 2022 is being held from April 25 to 28, 2022.
  • The conference serves as a platform for naval commanders to discuss important maritime matters at the military-strategic level.
  • During the conference, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will address and interact with the naval commanders.

Dr Bina Modi awarded by Indo-American Chamber of Commerce

  • Dr Bina Modi, Chairperson of Modi Enterprises was adjudged the ‘Woman Transforming India’ Award at the IndoAmerican Chamber of Commerce 6th Entrepreneur and Leadership Awards 2022.
  • She is also the President and MD of Godfrey Phillips India Ltd and CMD of Indofil Industries Limited.
  • She has earlier awarded the Women of the Decade in Business & Leadership 2018 by Women Economic Forum.

IIT Madras study finds painkiller effective against Covid-19

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug Indomethacin has shown excellent efficacy in the treatment of mild and moderate COVID-19 patients during the trial.
  • It was designed by IIT Madras.
  • The study further revealed that Indomethacin works with all variants.
  • The study was conducted at Panimalar Medical College and Research Institute and has been published in Nature Scientific Reports.

PM Modi receives first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award in Mumbai

  • PM Narendra Modi on 24 April 2022 received the first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award.
  • He was awarded for his selfless service to the country and society at the 80th annual Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Awards ceremony held in Mumbai.
  • The award has been instituted in memory and honour of Lata Mangeshkar who passed away in Mumbai earlier in 2022.

World Malaria Day: 25 April

  • Every year, World Malaria Day is observed on April 25 to create a global awareness of malaria.
  • This day has been observed by the African government since 2001 but was first marked in 2008.
  • The 60th session of the World Health Assembly converted Africa Malaria Day to World Malaria Day.
  • The theme for 2022 is ‘Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.

PM Modi to inaugurate 7th edition of Raisina Dialogue on April 25

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the seventh edition of the Raisina Dialogue on 25 April 2022.
  • President of the European Union Ursula Von Der Leyen will be the chief guest at the Dialogue.
  • The three-day event is based on the theme – Terranova, impassioned, impatient, imperilled.
  • The Raisina Dialogue will have around 100 sessions with over 210 speakers from 90 countries.

48th All India Police Science Congress

  • The Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the 48th All India Police Science Congress organized by the Bureau of Police Research and Development at the Central Police Training Academy in Bhopal.
  • In his address, the Union Minister pointed that as envisaged by PM Modi, coordination and cooperation between the Police systems of all the states is very necessary for smart policing.

Champions of the Earth Lifetime Achievement Award 2021

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has named Sir David Attenborough, English natural history broadcaster and naturalist, as the recipient of the Champions of the Earth Award 2021 under the Lifetime Achievement category, for his dedication to research, documentation, and advocacy for the protection of nature and its restoration.
  • Sir David Attenborough is well known for his innovative educational television programs, especially the nine-part Life series forming the Life collection. His well-known documentaries include The Green Planet and A Plastic Ocean.
  • He was knighted twice by Queen Elizabeth II in 1985 and again in 2020.

India’s first report on State of India’s Children

  • The latest report on the State of India’s Children: Status and Trends in Multidimensional Child Development will be jointly developed and launched by NITI Aayog and UNICEF India.
  • This was determined, when the two organisations signed a Statement of Intent (SoI), reiterating their joint commitment to achieving children’s rights in India.
