- The day commemorates the Khejarli massacre of 1730 in Rajasthan. The Bishnoi community led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi and many others sacrificed their lives while protecting Khejri trees from being cut down by the forces of Maharaja Abhay Singh of Jodhpur.
- Amrita Devi famously expressed the principle that protecting a tree was worth more than one’s life. 363 Bishnois were killed in the incident.
