Navratnas of Akbar

           Akbar’s court had 9 eminent people also called nine gems (Navaratnas) who helped Akbar make key decisions These Navratnas were proficient in different art fields. They are,

  1. Abul Fazl = Prime Minister of Akbar
  2. Faizi = Education Minister of Akbar
  3. Tansen = Culture Minister and Singer of Akba
  4. Raja Birbal = Foreign Minister of Akbar
  5. Raja Todar Mal = Finance Minister of Akbar
  6. Raja Man Singh = Chief of Staff of Akbar’s Mughal Army
  7. Fakir Aziao Din = Religious Minister of Akbar
  8. Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan = Defence Minister of Akbar
  9. Mirza Aziz Koka = Home Minister of Akbar

Abul Fazl

  • His real name was Shaikh Abu al-Fazal ibn Mubarak also known as Abu’l-Fazl
  • He authored Akbarnama and Ain-i-Akbari.
  • He led the Mughal army in its war in Deccan.
  • On the orders of Prince Salim, he was killed by Bir Singh Bundela.
  • He also translated the Bible into the Persian language.

Faizi

  • He was a great Persian poet.
  • Brother of Abul Fazl.
  • Under his supervision, the Mahabharata was translated into the Persian language.
  • He also translated Lilavati (a work on mathematics) into Persian.
  • He got the status of Malik-ush-Shu’ara (Court Poet) by Akbar

Tansen

  • He served as a great musician in the court of king Ramachandra who titled him “Tansen”.
  • He was born as Tanna Mishra.
  • Akbar gave him the title of “Mian” (meaning = learned man).
  • It is believed that he could bring fire and rain through singing the ragas Deepak and Megh Malhar respectively.
  • Ramtanu was his birth name and was a disciple of Swami Haridas in earlier days and later on, he learned music from Hazrat Muhammad Ghaus.
  • He was a musician in Akbar’s court and is remembered for his epic Dhrupad compositions, creating several new ragas, as well as for writing two classic books on music- Sri Ganesh Stotra and Sangita Sara.

Raja Birbal

  • His original name was Mahesh Das.
  • Akbar gave him the title of “Raja” and “Birbal”.
  • He was a great singer and poet in the Mughal Court of Akbar the Great. He was a master in Sanskrit, Persian and Hindi languages.
  • He also gave military and administrative services to Akbar and died in the battle while subduing the unrest amongst Afghani tribes in North-west India.
  • He was also a poet and his collections under the pen name “Brahma” are preserved in Bharatpur Museum.
  • Birbal became the only Hindu to convert to Din-i Ilahi, the religion created by Akbar.

Raja Todar Mal

  • He was the head of the revenue system. He introduced standard weights and measures.
  • He had earlier worked under Sher Shah Suri.
  • Akbar honoured him with the title of “Diwan-i-Ashraf”.
  • He was the Finance Minister of the Mughal empire during Akbar’s reign and was one of the Navaratnas in Akbar’s court.
  • He introduced standard weights and measures, a land survey and settlement system, revenue districts, and officers.
  • Todar Mal is credited for the creation of the world’s first land accounting and measurement system.
  • This system of maintenance by Patwari is still used in the Indian Subcontinent which was improved by the British and the Government of India

Raja Man Singh

  • One of the trusted generals of Akbar.
  • Raja Man Singh I was the Chief of Staff of the Mughal Army.
  • Raja Man Singh was the Raja of Amber (present-day Jaipur) and was one of the famous Navaratnas of the royal court of Akbar.
  • One of Akbar’s trusted generals, his daughter Manorama Bai was married to Crown Prince Dara Shikoh, the oldest son of Shah Jahan.
  • He was a general in Akbar’s army and was the grandson of Akbar’s father-in-law Bharmal.
  • He fought many battles including the historic battle of ‘Haldighati’ against Maharana Pratap.
  • Perhaps his most famous architectural achievement is the Krishna temple, which stands at 7 floors high in Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.

Fakir Aziao Din

  • He was one of the chief advisors of Akbar.
  • He was a Sufi mystic.

Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khanan

  • Son of Bairam Khan.
  • He was a great poet. He translated Baburnama into Persian.
  • He was the son of Bairam Khan, Akbar’s trusted guardian and mentor.
  • Known for his Urdu couplets and his books on astrology.
  • He translated Babar’s memoirs, Baburnama from the Chagatai language to the Persian language.
  • He wrote two books on astrology- Khetakautukam and Dwatrimshadyogavali.

Mirza Aziz Koka

  • Also known as Khan-i-Azam or Kotaltash.
  • Foster brother of Akbar.
  • He was also appointed Subedar of Gujarat.
