  • Jiya Rai has become the youngest and fastest female swimmer in the world to swim across the Palk Strait from Talaimannar (Sri Lanka) to Dhanuskodi (India).
  • She covered a distance of 29 km, in 13 hours and 10 minutes on 20th March 2022.
  • She achieved the feat at the age of 13 years and 10 months.
  • The record was earlier held by Bula Chowdhary who swam the distance in 13 hours 52 minutes in 2004.

BPCL becomes the first to offer digital payment to non-internet users

  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a ‘Maharatna’ and Fortune Global 500 company, has teamed up with UltraCash Technologies Pvt. Ltd. to provide BharatGas customers with a voice-based digital payment option for booking LPG cylinders.
  • Customers who do not have access to a smartphone or the internet can use this feature to book cylinders and pay via the ‘UPI 123PAY’ system.
  • Customers can call the common number 080 4516 3554 from a non-internet phone to reserve a BharatGas cylinder for themselves or for friends in simple steps and in a secure manner thanks to the collaboration with Ultra Cash.

“Sujalam 2.0” campaign

  • Ministry of Jal Shakti has launched the “Sujalam 2.0” campaign for Greywater management on the occasion of World Water Day, 2022 (22 March 2022). It was launched by Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
  • Theme: The theme for this year for Sujalam 2.0 campaign is ‘Groundwater: making the invisible visible’.
  • Objective of Sujalam 2.0: to manage greywater through people’s participation. Under the campaign, we plan to mobilize communities, our institutions like panchayats, schools, anganwadi to undertake greywater management.
  • What is Grey Water: Greywater refers to domestic wastewater generated in households or office buildings from streams without fecal contamination, i.e., all streams except for the wastewater from toilets.

‘First wildlife bond’ to save Africa’s black Rhino

  • The World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, IBRD) has issued the Wildlife Conservation Bond (WCB) to support of South Africa’s efforts to conserve endangered species of Black Rhino.
  • Wildlife Conservation Bond (WCB) is also known as “Rhino Bond”. It is a five-year $150 million Sustainable Development Bond. It includes a potential performance payment from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
  • The bond will contribute to protecting and increasing black rhino populations in two protected areas in South Africa namely the Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) and the Great Fish River Nature Reserve (GFRNR).

Children’s book ‘The Little Book of Joy’

  • A Children’s Book ‘The Little Book of Joy’ authored by Dalai Lama & Desmond Tutu.
  • A picture book edition co-authored by Nobel Peace Prize winners 14th Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) & Archbishop Desmond Tutu, titled “The Little Book of Joy” will be released in September 2022.
  • In 2016, they also co-authored the book titled “The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World”, which became a bestseller & sold more than 1 million copies and translated into more than 40 languages.
  • The illustrations provided by artist Rafael López and Rachel Neumann & Douglas Abrams collaborated on the text.

“Bersama Shield 2022” exercise

  • Malaysia will host armed forces from 4 nations namely, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom in the Bersama Shield 2022 (BS22) exercise.
  • Bersama means together in Malay.
  • The exercise will involve sea and air drills, mostly in international waters but also in part of Malaysia’s exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea.
  • The exercise, referred to as BS22, is conducted within the framework of the Five Power Defense Arrangements (FPDA).

Hottest place on Earth

  • Kuwait reached a scorching temperature of 53.2 degrees Celsius making it among the hottest places on the Earth.
  • It was so hot in the city last summer that the birds dropped dead from the sky. The extremes of climate change present existential perils all over the world.
  • However, the record heat waves that roast Kuwait each season have grown extremely severe.
