US became 4th largest Crude Oil supplier to India:

The US supplied 10.7 million tonnes of crude oil to India in 2020, behind Iraq’s 47 million tonnes, Saudi Arabia’s 38 million tonnes, and UAE’s 22 million tonnes. The US supply accounted for about 5% of India’s total imports of 204 million tonnes in the year, a big jump for the country which had started exporting oil India in 2017.

Indian researchers spot rare Super Luminous Super Nova:

     An extremely bright, hydrogen deficient, fast-evolving supernova that shines with the energy borrowed from an exotic type of neutron star with an ultra-powerful magnetic field has been spotted by Indian researchers. The team observed it using special arrangements at India’s recently commissioned Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT-3.6m) along with two other Indian telescopes: Sampurnanand Telescope-1.04m and Himalayan Chandra Telescope-2.0m. It was first discovered by Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) Nainital

The genome of a Salt secreting Mangrove Species Decoded by DBT-ILS:

     Scientists at the DBT-Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar and SRM-DBT Partnership Platform for Advanced Life Sciences Technologies, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Tamil Nadu have reported for the first time a reference-grade whole genome sequence of a highly salt-tolerant and salt-secreting true-mangrove species, Avicennia marinaAvicennia marina is one of the most prominent mangroves species found in all mangrove formations in India. It is a salt-secreting and extraordinarily salt-tolerant mangrove species that grows optimally in 75% seawater and tolerates >250% seawater.

Twitter appoints Vinay Prakash as Grievance Officer:

     Twitter has named Vinay Prakash as the Resident Grievance Officer (RGO) for India, as per the information updated on its website. Users can contact Vinay Prakash using an email ID listed on the page. Earlier the US-based company had announced the appointment of California-based Jeremy Kessel as the new Grievance Officer for India. However, as per the new IT rules in India, social media platforms with over 50 lakh users are mandated to appoint three key personnel namely chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer, and all these three personnel have to be residents in India.

World Malala Day:

     The United Nations has declared 12th July as World Malala Day to honour the young activist, Malala Yousafzai. Malala Day is commemorated, the birthday of Malala Yousafzai to honour women and children’s rights around the world.

  • In 2012, she was awarded the first-everNational Youth Peace Prize by the Pakistan government.
  • In 2014, at age 17, she became the youngest-ever recipient of theNobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts for children’s rights which had begun even before she was shot.
  • The UN has declared her as“the most famous teenager in the world” in its Decade in Review report in late 2019.
  • Malala has also been awarded honoraryCanadian citizenship and became the youngest person to address the House of Commons in Canada.
  • The documentary on the activist,He Named Me Malala, was shortlisted for the Oscars in 2015.
  • She has also authored another book titledWe Are Displaced that chronicles her experiences of travelling the world and visiting refugee camps.

India’s First Cryptogamic Garden:

     India’s first cryptogamic garden was inaugurated in Deoban area of the Dehradun district in Uttarakhand. At an altitude of 2,700 meters, spanning over an area of 3 acres, Deoban has majestic pristine forests of Deodar, Oak. Being a pollution-free area, it also supports the ample growth of Cryptogams. “Cryptogamae means ‘hidden reproduction’ referring to the fact that no seed, no flowers are produced, thus cryptogams represent the non-seed bearing plants. Algae, Bryophytes (Moss; Liverworts), Lichens, Ferns, Fungi are the best-known groups of cryptogams.

India’s first private LNG Facility plant:

     Minister for Road Transport and Highways inaugurated the country’s First Private LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Facility plant at Nagpur. The Ministry emphasized on the importance of alternate biofuels for diversification of agriculture towards the energy and power sector.

Argentina lifts Copa America Cup:

     Argentina won their first major title in 28 years on Saturday (Sunday AEST) and Lionel Messi finally won his first medal in a blue-and-white shirt when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil and a record-equalling 15th Copa America. Argentina managed to hold on to their 1-0 lead till the final whistle to end their 28-year-long title drought and clinch their 15th Copa America title – putting them on a level with Uruguay for most title wins.

Huge Victory for Aby Ahmed:

     Ethiopia’s ruling Prosperity Party on July 10 was declared the winner of last month’s national election in a landslide, assuring a second five-year term for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The National Election Board of Ethiopia said the ruling party won 410 seats out of 436 contested in the federal parliament, which will see dozens of other seats remain vacant after one-fifth of constituencies didn’t vote due to unrest or logistical reasons

Third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting:

     Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman participated virtually in the Third G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting under the Italian Presidency. The two-day meeting held on July 9th and 10th, 2021 saw discussions on a wide range of issues including global economic risks and health challenges, policies for recovery from the CoVID-19 pandemic, international taxation, sustainable finance and financial sector issues.

Wimbledon Junior Men`s title won by Samir Banerjee:

     Indian-American Samir Banerjee has claimed the Wimbledon men’s junior title after defeating Victor Lilov in an all-American final on No. 1 Court. 17-year-old Banerjee won 7-5, 6-3 against Lilov and lost three sets in all the matches he played at the All England Club.

Cloudburst in Dharmashala:

     A cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh’s Dharamshala has caused flash floods in the hilly town and washed away vehicles in the Bhagsu Nag area. While several cars were submerged in water, the video recorded by residents of the town shows a white car floating down the street due to the force of flood water.
